Kielwood Shaft Quality

Kielwood shaft question:
I have only used the InFuze Kielwood shaft that I own. The shaft is not as smooth as regular maple shafts or CF shafts.

When I received it, the finish at the joint end was higher than normal so I sanded it a bit and while at it I lightly sanded the whole shaft which made it smoother, but after burnishing it and applying Q Glide (that makes regular maple shafts very slick) it went back to feel just as it started, not that slick at all, even with a glove.

Is it like that with all Kielwood shafts?

I like the look of kielwood, much nicer than CF but deflects more and I do believe that it's a passing fab, a CF shafts makes much more sense if looking for performance and a regular/LD wooden shaft make more sense if looking for the wooden feel.
I have 3 Kielwood shaft made by Barnhart and Pierce. All 3 shafts arrived smooth as satin and despite that,
I still applied Renaissance Wax to the shafts immediately and regularly since getting the shafts. The KW shafts
in my case are absolutely flawless and now smoother than any original shaft I ever received from any cue maker.

The Barnhart RMS shaft weighs 3.81 ozs, 29.5” and 12.85mm. The other two shafts are made by a great cue maker.
Jim Pierce and the deflection is very slight & the shafts are flat faced without any weight inserts…..just wood….and
are 29”, 12.6mm, 4.0 ozs and 12.75mm, 4.15 ozs. People tried giving me a bunch of shit about heavier version KW
shafts but I ignore assholes, especially since a I’ve been accused of being one myself. Well, I am more than pleased.

what is your process on waxing the kielwood shafts? How often do you wax them?

I wax the shaft weekly or if there was ever any time the shaft just didn’t feel right in my closed bridge that I likely use 75% of the time. Pool gloves have never appealed to me because it insulates my fingers from feeling the speed of the shaft that gives me feedback on my stroke. I use a more tightly curled closed bridge than a lot of pool players so I tend to notice how the shaft feels and glides. When the shaft has a satin like feel, you tend to notice if it changes any. IMO, addt’l coats of wax aren’t going to hurt the shaft in any way. The wax isn’t getting layered and removal is by manually burnishing the shaft to the point that despite wearing a glove, my index finger and thumb on my right hand still occasionally will blister.

The application is easy. Use a soft cloth and apply the wax like you were spit shining your shoes……small area application until the shaft is covered and the length is up to you. My shafts are 29” so I typically apply wax to about 20-22” of the shaft even though my bridge never feels that low on the cue shaft. Dry time is short…..5 - 7 mins. but it can be longer. The wax is easier to remove left on the shaft for a shorter duration than longer. I wax the shaft at least twice every time I wax it.
