small tight pockets in one pocket good or bad?

The owner where I play is a 1 pocket player and also a Diamond Dealer so he ordered several tables with extended sub rails taking pockets to 4 1/8” for 1 pocket.

It took a small adjustment but I actually like how they play and I play rotation on these tables as well. While the pocket is tighter, I came to the realization that when they extended the sub rails to take it to 4 1/8”, that this shortened the shelf a bit as compared to the other standard 4 1/2” Diamonds he has there. So I actually think that while the opening is smaller, the shelf being shortened actually lends to them playing a little better.
Don’t keep me guessing🙈 what's the name of the room?

4” flat is my preference. Been playing the game on that size pocket ever since I learned at Santa Monica house of billiards many moons ago. My local pool hall now “the cue ball” in Alhambra has 7 diamonds with 4” pockets. They play exceptionally. Hit the hole or get out lol

Dang, I’ll have to beg the boss for a Burbank trip this year.

A few different winters around 15-18 yrs. ago I stayed in Venice for several weeks and playing regularly at H.O.B....played O.P. Rich, Wayne, Phil, Danny 'Shades', 'Limo' Bob, Roger, Magdy, scientist Rob, and a few other guys who's names I forget....it was a great poolroom, I liked it a lot, even with those 4" pockets, lol.

Yup. I learned the game playing rich, Wayne, magdy, and Phil. So much knowledge in that room. Limo Bob barely played by the time I came around like 12 years ago but he was fun to sit on the rail with and listen to him talk about how everybody was shooting the wrong shot lol

sadly those pool rooms are mostly gone replaced with league playing rooms or monthly paying players knocking around balls by themselves.

Like I said, not the case here in SoCal. 4” pockets as far as the eye can see and rooms are packed

i dont believe thats the case as written by you. if so i am in shock.

first that most of the pool rooms have 4 inch pockets on their tables
. i would bet that none have, except maybe one or two tables for one pocket.
and also they are packed with players.

Ok lol. So instead of a simple “wow I didn’t know that maybe I was wrong!” we’re going for a “I’m right and you’re a liar even though I’ve never been there”. You can live in your world and I’ll live in mine buddy. Next time you visit beautiful sunny Southern California, stop into a pool hall and and fire some balls into the rails on our beautiful 4” pockets. If you can get a table that is. Cheers m8

He didn't call you a liar and I am not going to either , but if what you say is true you let the cat out of the bag because it is unheard of.😉

I played at HoB several times and don't recall 4" pockets, maybe 4.25".

At another room, in Burbank, I think they had GCs with 5" pockets. HTs certainly didn't have 4" pockets. (Their snooker table had some itty bitty pockets, lol.) And though I only played there once I'm pretty sure Stix in Ventura did not have 4" pockets, maybe 4.5".

Lastly, I recently played at CA Billiards in Fremont and felt they came in at a reasonable 4.5".

Hob most certainly had 4” pockets even 3 7/8 on some tables. Hardtimes FAMOUSLY had 4” pockets on the tournament side. Other popular action rooms here with 4” pockets are aloha billiards in Buena Park (big action here people playing 2-10k sets daily), libertad in Santa Monica (one pocket room all 4 brunswicks have 4” pockets), sportsman’s in Crenshaw (one pocket room. One table has 3.5” pockets), cue ball in Alhambra (my home room, 7 diamonds all with 4” pockets), VIP billiards in diamond bar, hob Sherman oaks has 3-4 tables with 4”. The list goes on but those are the rooms I go to or at least have been recently. And, especially in the evening, you will be waiting for a table at all these locations

One thing I have learned over the years is that nothing stays the same.

I have been to pool halls that had 4.5" pockets, only to come back and find smaller pockets. Gone to other rooms filled with nice GCs and find half the room is GCs and the other half Diamonds.

IOWs, thngs change. When went to HOB I did not encounter any 4" pockets.

Don't know about Aloha, Ibertad, Crenshaw, Alhambra, or Sherman Oaks. In any case, people do stupid shit and ruin the game -- enjoy if you can.

Things change, but not this thing. If you were there anytime after 2000 you’re simply mistaken. Or they just sent you to the kiddie table

Went there *many* times while my Mom was still alive living there.

Played One Pocket Richie there. Don't recall a kiddie table but would often play 3C there on the back tables.

To the best of my recollection, the pockets were tight but not 4".
