Don’t keep me guessingThe owner where I play is a 1 pocket player and also a Diamond Dealer so he ordered several tables with extended sub rails taking pockets to 4 1/8” for 1 pocket.
It took a small adjustment but I actually like how they play and I play rotation on these tables as well. While the pocket is tighter, I came to the realization that when they extended the sub rails to take it to 4 1/8”, that this shortened the shelf a bit as compared to the other standard 4 1/2” Diamonds he has there. So I actually think that while the opening is smaller, the shelf being shortened actually lends to them playing a little better.
They're still in style as about the perfect size for as the OP says "us mortals"My Diamond is fantastic for the game. I focus on one hole but it sees a lot of rotation, eight ball and a little straight pool.
4.5” pockets were considered tightish when I bought it in 2007.
Hi John, just a shout out that I’m still enjoying your cue. They're still in style as about the perfect size for as the OP says "us mortals"
Dang, I’ll have to beg the boss for a Burbank trip this year.4” flat is my preference. Been playing the game on that size pocket ever since I learned at Santa Monica house of billiards many moons ago. My local pool hall now “the cue ball” in Alhambra has 7 diamonds with 4” pockets. They play exceptionally. Hit the hole or get out lol

Yup. I learned the game playing rich, Wayne, magdy, and Phil. So much knowledge in that room. Limo Bob barely played by the time I came around like 12 years ago but he was fun to sit on the rail with and listen to him talk about how everybody was shooting the wrong shot lolA few different winters around 15-18 yrs. ago I stayed in Venice for several weeks and playing regularly at H.O.B....played O.P. Rich, Wayne, Phil, Danny 'Shades', 'Limo' Bob, Roger, Magdy, scientist Rob, and several other guys who's names I forget....it was a great poolroom, I liked it a lot, even with those 4" pockets, lol.
