Are Pool League Members Allowed to Gamble Outside of League Play?

Does membership in a U.S. national pool league, where a player competes individually or as part of a team at regional or national levels, prohibit gambling when they are not actively participating in league events?

Of course, gambling on league matches, match fixing, betting on your own league games, or anything that compromises competitive integrity during league events, that a big no-no and should result in a permanent ban.

But I am wondering if private, off-the-clock gambling that has no connection to league events or outcomes should be prohibited or against the rules. Thoughts?

Im sure people that are league players sometimes gamble, but in my opinion that is mostly not so.

I think Pool is growing but not in the direction of anything to do with gambling, but I'm sure some gamble
small at times, but probably not many times.

I don't think leagues could tell their people no gambling on pool period because then there would have to be a penalty
and no league operator wants to remove anyone making them money.

Just my opinion from observation.

You're not wondering about 2 guys that play in a Monday night BCA league playing cheap sets outside of league, are you?

Hell, a couple of us on the same team have running Friday night 9-ball ring game. It's a blast.

Absent something completely inappropriate, why in the heck would a league care what happens outside of league?

Am I not understanding the question?

I agree. A better idea if teams that wanted a additional side pot of 500 a team in Vegas for example would be great for the teams that wanted to do it. For example it cost about 3 thousand to attend. First place of the event was 3 thousand. So you have to win to break even. When the winning team wins 200,000 dollars then they can consider gambling rules but currently the only winners are the hotel and the BCA.

I don’t even think players should be prohibited to bet on their own matches or against or for their teammates.

When I played leagues it was always fun to bet a $20 on your match to make it interesting.

I’ve been in many places that had signs saying “No Gambling” and everyone was gambling . If the leagues had those rules it might change how discreet players were about it but that’s all

Playing pool for stakes isn't gambling it's a contest of skill. Well a contest of skill with aspects of luck. The Washington judge decided the skill was deciding factor.
I had a youngster try to tell me that it was gambling to play for 5 a game. That was what we were playing when he put up a quarter and wanted to play for fun. His position was we could get the house in trouble for gambling. So I replied, "This is a tournament, single game, single elimination. The entry is $5. When this tournament is done we will play another. Do you want in our tournament?" He finally withdrew his quarter. 🤷‍♂️

are you kidding. all the league players that play well play for cash at some level. does any one really think that after you get good you just hit them around all day for fun. and do you think you can get good playing for fun. few do.
if you want to play with someone that can play, you usually have to bet something. nowadays its mostly in one pocket.

i did run into a few rooms that had no gambling signs. and the locals all said just don't throw the money around on the table but passed it off.

Once I beat a manager of a bar a game of 8b. There were two signs. One said “no last pocket 8-ball.” The other said “no gambling.”

So we gamble at 8b. Not too much this was in the 80s.

I make the las of my set and go to shoot the 8 ball and he says “last pocket.” Luckily it was bankable and I made it.

Then he started to walk away and I asked for the money. He pointed to the “no gambling” sign and kept walking.

Some bouncers kept me from following. This was Chicago. He had that look.

I just left with the life lesson.

sooner or later everyone gets stiffed at gambling for some money. soon you learn who to gamble with and when to put up.

and after winning a bunch dont care about the last game.

Okay Pool League team had a quarter/fifty cent ring game . One before the 5 and 2 before the 9. Simple shrug 🤷‍♂️. I/We busted the quarter machine. I was tearing up the game so bad that no one would give me a dollar bill until the machine went dry around $35. 🤷‍♂️
My team mates. Gotta love 'em.
