I strapped a cheap Behringer 8 band graphic between the DVD player and the amp, tweaked in a smiley curve and voila, ghetto hifi. It's functionally the main preamp. Got a good amp though.Once I run it thru the EQ, then out thru the Boston's and Klipsch Towers, anything sounds grand.
I bet it sounds pretty good and wouldn't want to be around if you cranked the dial past 3.
It sounds great near field. I'm using 3 pair of bookshelves in two "arrays" The amp's a 400 watt Carver which would blow the speakers at any more than 1/3rd up. 90 -100 db in the listening triangle is more than I can take anyway.I bet it sounds pretty good and wouldn't want to be around if you cranked the dial past 3.
Any higher can damage your hearing.
I've always had amps and pre amps w RMS from 100 -250 watts and there's really no good reason to have that much power. I never got the dial above 3. Things start vibrating off the shelves and I hate to clean.
Modern hi-definition digital through a good DAC is superior to just about any analogue. I've listened to some super hi-end systems and while i still dig analog/tubes/horns modern digital has just as much warmth/atmosphere as the best vinyl could even hope for. At one listening i attended there were a few hard-core vinyl guys that had to eat serious crow after they found out what they thought was vinyl was actually a hi-def. digital stream. All the 'air' plus real bass that vinyl can only dream about. BTW, someone mentioned dynamic range. Well, vinyl has roughly a max of 80db while standard digital is about 95-100. Hi-def digital can max out as high as 144db.
