I had a Mizerak Dove plain Jane stolen. Never really thought much about it. Still had my BEM Miz and bought a wrapless players to make my second cue.

Beat a guy outta $2,600 in the 80's (great score back then (they walked and somehow so did my cue.)
Never even knew what type of cue it was, but it played good.
The road player came in with his stake horse, played the horse (he knew me) they left broke, and so walked my cue.

I wonder what happened to my friends cues that got swiped and how fun it still would be to beat the life out of the person(s) that did it.
After playing my match one night at league, I packed up everything but my breaker because a teammate was using it to break with. At the end of the night, I grabbed my cue case and hit the road. Of course I left my breaker behind. It was just a cheap Action jump break cue, and I had left it behind, so I replaced it with another and moved on. The next time we played that team, one of the players on the opposing team brought my cue over to me. It turns out that he had been using it as his playing cue since the night I left it behind. I ended up selling it to him for the same price I had bought the replacement for. The last time I saw him, he was still using that break cue as his playing cue.
Years ago I suggested that Az create a cue registry and charge a fee to have pool cues registered as owned by you.
As a practice, every ethical cue dealer, collector or just a periodic buyer should check that the cue seller is the owner.
I don’t expect every single cue to get listed but the more expensive, collectible, sentimental custom pool cues could.
Every single cue I own I’d register. Pawn shops should be required to double check which would be simple and easy.

Back in college, in the 70's, I had my one of a kind custom from Palmer's custom shop, stolen...I used to take it to school to play in the game room...I had to go to my next class, and walked out to my car to get my books and I hid the cue in the way back, (area behind the rear seats, where the convertible top folded into)...locked the vehicle...came back from class and my top was slashed, and the cue was gone...there was a weird dude in the pool room that day, that I had never seen before, and he wasn't even playing, just watching everyone else...on my way back from putting the cue in my car, I passed him in the parking lot...he probably saw me put it in my car...never saw him or the cue, ever again...I think about that cue all the time...
Lost a couple, Vegas 2002. They were after the car and the cues were a bonus. I genuinely hope that they landed in a collection somewhere. Maybe someone brought them to Fatboy. 
I wouldn't be mad or have any claim against anyone who bought them twenty years ago. Better than a dumpster. Have several old cues myself now and damn sure can't say that none of them were ever stolen.

Having run a pawn shop in Texas, the biggest obstacle with theft recovery would be an accurate description on both the owner's end and then when it's pawned/purchased. This description should definitely include serial numbers or unique markings, wood types, veneer colors, types of inlays, etc but your average pawn employee likely knows very little about pool cues.
The cue owner should also have very detailed high-resolution pictures showing the full cue and any unique features of a cue. It should also include any supporting documentation like the purchase receipt or LoAs.
I can only speak to Texas, but there is a registry that all of the pawn/purchase data gets uploaded to for law enforcement and they search by pictures and/or description and the more information you have, the more likely they can find a match. Some do, but I don't believe pawn shops here are required to take pictures. That said, I've been out of that game for a while.
The high-resolution pictures and details would also be helpful for the insurance rider if that wasn't required to start with.
let see many or most cues are worth 1000 dollars or more. mine are. mostly.
i dont leave a 1000 in cash,, unattended,, sitting on a pool table and go to the bathroom or walk away from it. do you?
do you leave your wallet at the gas pump and go inside and get a cup of coffee?
why do it with your pool cue.
it get stolen because you are negligent. so don't cry.
unless they break into your car. then its a different story.

It was also a really bad cue, as I found out later.
A few years ago, I failed to lock my car at my place and my Predator got taken from the trunk. Relatively quiet residential street.

My very first cue was won at an arcade in Medford, Oregon. They had a glass box with a fan that blew money and coupons around, and I had a few seconds to grab what I could. One coupon was for the cue.
About a year later (back in Colorado), I was hitchhiking to Estes Park and thought I'd be a swell guy and smoke a little weed with my ride. Got stoned and left it in the car when he drove off.

The ICCS is looking into to this for cues owned by members.
We would have a photo station to grab the same set of photos for every cue registered and then assign a token ID to the cue
Essentially creating a blockchain of ownership for a registered cue that is transferable from one owner to the next all maintained by the ICCS.
Something I have been doing is placing RFID stickers under my leather wraps whenever I get a cue refinished. You can't tell its there but can be read by a phone from as far as four feet away.
Mostly I use it to catalog my collection in an App I have but it could be used to prove ownership if one of the tagged cues got stolen.
I have an air tag in my case. At least it's something...
Consider:
Owner 1 buys a cue and registers that ownership with ICCS.
Owner 1, or their heirs, sells the cue to Owner 2, but does not report transfer of ownership to ICCS.
Owner 2 tries to sell the cue to a pawn shop after a night of unusually bad rolls just before rent is due. Pawn shop owner checks ICCS database, and sees that the registered owner is Owner 1.
Should the pawn shop owner be required to contact Owner 1 (or their heirs), or should the pawn shop be allowed to, in absence of a police report documenting theft, buy and resell the cue?
In this example, there was no theft, but it could just as easily happen if someone stole a cue and tried to sell it a couple hundred miles down the road. Such databases have the inherent flaw that legitimate owners are not compelled to report changes in ownership. Unscrupulous owners could even sell their cue, then later report it stolen instead of sold.
Has ICCS addressed this weakness in the system?
