Worst Cue by a Revered Builder.

This post is so confusing.
 
Feel free to ask if my lack of detail distracts my point. I was surprised in another thread how many noted cue builders delivered a dud player. I also do believe Eric at Sugartree is a wood savant. Zylers protege too, I’m drawing a blank.
 
I purchased a big wrap less segmented handle cue from a very well-known Maker. It was flat out beautiful, perfect execution, finish, every single detail of the cue was flawless. It hit like a brick, zero feel, no feedback, I tried 8-10 different tip and ferrule combinations on it to try and like it, but I failed. Someone saw a picture of it, offered crazy money, and I gladly sent it down the road. Brian.

well you did call it dear hunting in OP. You could have posted some of this in OP and we would understand what you are getting at.

Some woods warp more often than others no matter you do. Snakewood is beautiful but tends to crack. If it does, I wouldnt blame the builder.

Dale Perry? I always felt that his earlier (90's era) cues were high quality, but his newer cues (anything that he made with a Radial Pin) were pretty Garbage quality.

The wood in the shafts really felt like garbage. He could not even put a decent taper on the shafts. I had 2, that were like the worst feeling / hitting cues that I ever tried. Just my opinion though.

On the other hand, I have played with several of his older cues, and I felt that they played super nice, and looked very high quality, to me. They always had a Uni Loc joint on them, but I know the joint had nothing to do with the quality. I just think he was a far better cue maker back in the 90's, and used much better quality materials, to build his cues.

That’s another story. Bob R sold me a snake wood fancy SP, it never warped. Should have kept it, I think it ended up in Hawaii, May of got bent there.

I didn’t come along until Dale was only eBay. I have heard good things about the cues he personally built. I’d love to talk to him about his business model and how he feels about his reputation.

From my experience, he was a 1st class A Hole. He treated me so horrible on this one deal. Sent me a sneaky pete cue, that was like the biggest POS that I ever held in my hand, and it somehow got a crack in the butt, that was not my doing, and he blamed me. Said that it must have been my fault, and refused to give me a full refund.

On another occasion, when I called him up (about a different purchase, that happened years earlier), he acted like such an Egotistical A Hole, and laughed at me, during part of the phone call.

His cues, after maybe 2003-2005, that he sold on ebay, were pure garbage, from my few experiences with them.

But, anyways, yeah, his early cues played amazing, and were very high quality, I thought.
 
I won't mention the cue builder's name, but I was shocked by the appearance and feel of a legendary builder's cue. This was in Japan around 25 years ago, and the cue's owner had recently taken delivery of it. The points were so round that I thought the cue looked like a Fisher-Price toy. Despite the points and inlays, the cue struck me as quite basic and underwhelming. Worse was the dead hit. I would have been disappointed if I paid $600 for that cue, let alone the 10 times more that the owner paid for it.

To be fair, I don't know what description or drawing the owner gave the builder when he was ordering the cue. I've order a few cues that way and learned that I'm better off buying finished cues that I can see and try. But the cues I ordered at least had a good hit and feel. Even if the builder gave that Japanese customer what he asked for, the cue's hit still had the grace of a foam dowel.

We are similar……I also use crushed red pepper flakes on a steak when I grill it, for scrambled eggs, chili.
I’ll open a can of Bush’s Baked Beans (Brown Sugar Hickory version), add diced Jalapeño peppers and
hot sausage links sliced in cubes & slow simmer cook it. This turns a can of baked beans into a quick meal.
