“Why It’s So Easy To Love Pool”

I just finished reading Philip Capelle’s A Mind For Pool and enjoyed the read.

While I didn’t really learn much or anything new, I thought its was cleverly written.

Really enjoyed chapter 19 “Enjoying Pool”. Was a great reminder of why I fell in love with this game to begin with.

I started at 13 years old, and am now 64.

1) The never-ending challenge of the game
2) The thrill of competition
3) You can practice by yourself
4) There are so many games you can play
5) A fine looking table that plays true
6) The beautiful work of master cue makers
7) A pool room is a refuge from the concerns of everyday life
8) You can play for a few minutes up to several hours
9) Pool rooms are a great place to socialize
10) The thrill of victory and agony of defeat

What are some of your favorite reminders of why you love this game?

Cheers,
Don

i posted this before a few years back in a similar thread, but at this point i think we all repeat ourselves here.

My introduction was visiting my uncle in the 80s. He had a table in his basement and i was allowed to bang balls around at a 8-9-10 years old. I knew nothing, couldn’t shoot, no rules. But something about making the balls do what i wanted was fun.

40+ years later i love the game still, i play around a 480-500 fargo with the occasional night above my rating. And I still think fondly on those memories of not knowing anything but enjoying hours playing in my uncle’s basement.

When i retire or get a bigger place i will have a table and let my nephews and nieces play on it.

That it is ageless, meaning you can play this game from 8 to 80, unlike many more traditional sports. I played hockey for 25 years at a high level, cannot do this anymore...it sucks

The mental aspect as well, the knowledge of the game. A young banger who can make balls, but does not recognize patterns, layouts and defensive shots will almost always lose. Using this newly acquired knowledge adds new layers and challenges to the game, therefor it is always evolving. Also, that there several ways to run out and everyone has a different perspective. Lastly, each break brings a never-before-seen layout, so it is the same game but always different

Well said. I was huge into motor sports, MX & Quads and destroyed my body and can’t do any of that anymore. Got big into motor sports photography for the love of the sport. Pool now, for me personally, is a way to keep me mobile and is actually good exercise for a beat up old man :)

I often shoot 25-30 racks by my self a couple times a week just for that purpose.

Thanks for taking the time to reply…
