The idea of the opening break is to break off the two corner balls and ideally have them come to the long rails and nestle back into the rack, and place the cue ball up on the head rail. The idea is to leave no shot.
A typical 14.1 match can have numerous safeties until one player errs and leaves opponent a shot. Then it’s cat and mouse game again unless a player has a relatively easy shot and can either completely open the rack, or break out a few balls at a time.
The requirement of the opening break, if you're not going to make a ball, is to make two object balls touch cushions and also have the cue ball touch a cushion after the object ball contact. The opening break against Efren left him no shot, just as hoped.
If you are going to play a ball out of the full rack, you have to call it. Very few players do that in tournaments. Usually it's a way to say to your opponent, "You can't play a lick, so I'm just going to break them open."

Still hit it like a bitch. I watched a tournament Saturday. Tournament started at almost 2 pm. At 2 am I left. The matches were still going. Pot was $10500. Not one player broke with a limp wrist. They broke like they had balls. Even the women.
And you have the mentality of a barroom player!!!!!!!!
Games like straight pool and onepocket you dont smash the rack on the break
