Appleton, Boyes and Melling robbed APA Nationals?

In an interview on the latest Legends Of The Cue podcast, Chris Melling says a friend created a fake league, convinced the APA that they were a British equivalent and convinced them to let their top team compete in the APA Nationals. Around 2001? The team had Karl Boyes, Darren Appleton and Chris Melling. Apparently they made it to the finals and lost.
I’ve never heard this story before. Has anyone else? Any more details about it?

Because they did not belong to the APA or any similar league. Their friend made up a fictitious league to get them in there.
APA is handicapped. I wonder what their fake handicaps were?
And yes, if you go into a tournament like this drastically under handicapped you are robbing the tournament.
 
Yes, I remember this and I was there at the Riviera in Las Vegas when it went down. I'm pretty sure that they played in the Masters division, not the Open division of the BCA National 8ball Championships, so handicapping was not relevant.

At the time, despite being experienced at Blackball (the English variant of 8ball, often played on a 3' x 6' table,) they were fairly new to American pool. Of course, their skills translated well to American bar box 8ball, but I wonder if even one of them had ever played it before they made that trip to Las Vegas.

Masters is APA, not BCA. If they played Masters that’s a bit better but Masters only has 4 players on a team, I believe he listed more than that for the team they had. The normal APA team events have 8 player teams.

You're right, but so am I, because I was referring to the BCA National Championships and not the APA National Championships. I was there when Appleton had his runner-up finish at the BCA Nationals Masters Division, but not when his team came second in the APA Nationals. Yes, BCA had a masters division, but I have no idea whether it is still the case.

My bad, and thanks for the correction.

Kind of funny when a sport that people on here glorify hustling and robbing people get angry when they do

There isn’t enough info available reading this. Which league was ir? Was it masters? Then they were amateurs and they weren’t robbing anyone

That’s where I’m hoping someone with knowledge of the specifics chimes in. Masters has 4 people per team, he lists 6 in the interview, so most likely the team event. And if that’s the case your roster can’t have 5 players whose handicaps add up to more than 23 , so what handicaps were they playing under?

Ah, I was referring to singles, not teams. There was a Masters division in singles, and Appleton managed a second place finish in the Masters Division 8ball at the BCA Nationals.

My experience with masters is that there are no limits on handicaps. Some teams have 4 players that average over 700 fargos. No one bitches, you just take pride is not loosing by that much.

If you read what I wrote I doubt it was a masters team, Chris lists 6 people that were on the team. Masters has 4 people per team.
