Luck as a skillset.

Hu made an awesome comment in a thread I was attempting to derail. He talked about luck being part of a skillset developed over time playing a certain type of pool.
I've often thought about this and how to explain it. I find myself apologizing over and over for leaving someone bad. Can't count the times I've heard "you get the rolls dude."
I've come to the realization that for me, in my game, I get the rolls. It happens far too often for it to be luck.
I'm going to look into this further. There's always the chance I'm full of shit.😉
Anybody else see this in their game??

"Better to be lucky than to be good." An old saying because skill can desert you sometimes, luck never does.

Running the computer models it was determined that poker wasn't a matter of luck. However, it could take several lifetimes for even career poker players to have luck even out. Sure sounds like some people are lucky to me! My great grandson is on his own.

One of my favorite tales since I are the star, a road player came to town. He watched me for three nights then decided he would rather talk than play. I tried to downplay how I played as getting the rolls or luck. He said, "The first night I thought you were lucky. The second night I still thought it might be luck. Nobody in the world gets as lucky as you do three nights in a row!"

Its always my prefrence to keep my opponent wondering if I made the shot because of skill or luck.

A Chinese guy (really and he wasn't old) told me years ago at some NYC dive bar when I started playing pool and once I was getting better and started beating him - "I'll take luck over skill any day"
I guess it's true...
I believe that you play well and play correctly then good rolls will come your way, it's like the universe tells you - "you did good, you deserve it".
Problem is, that this good roll and good luck always fade a way when I'm on the 9

One person gets lucky about as often as any other person, but some people put in the work and preparation needed to better capitalize on luck when it comes their way.

I think I know what you are getting at. It's like experience trains you through positive feedback that some shots or ways to play position give you slightly better outcomes over time, when randomness is introduced, so you prioritize those methods and you get a little lucky a little more often.

I remember playing back in Denver we had a player there who was a pizza delivery guy and he was one lucky SOB. Everybody complained about his rolls.

Anyway, this pizza delivery guy was on a big roll, he was a B+ player and he played good AND he seemed to get every single lucky roll. During that time when he had won several tournaments in the last week, he managed to win the hot seat and I played through to face him in the finals. A friend told me "I know you can out shoot him but I don't think you can beat his luck." I smiled and said "Watch this, I'm going to beat him but I'm going to out-luck him, not out shoot him."

Anyway, I played that match with the intention of getting lucky every shot. Ride the nine, bump into stuff, break up clusters violently, shoot hard at bank shots.

I beat him I think 5-2 and he did nothing but complain about what a lucky SOB I was. I laughed my ass off and everyone loved it! They all wanted to know how I knew I was going to get that lucky. I just told them I didn't know, I just got lucky. :)

But over time I've realized that I've gone from a player who used to NEVER get lucky to a player that can almost count on things rolling my way a few times a match. And I don't mind being called a lucky SOB. I love it if I can get lucky early and get my opponent thinking I'm getting the rolls. Their thoughts work against them.

"Luck sir is a residue of skill"

I never considered myself lucky but many others did. We all have luck, good and bad. We can focus on the good luck or we can focus on the bad luck. Some are convinced they have the bad luck from hell! Over time it becomes true.

My grandmother always patronized church events. She bought food at the outdoor events but told us to check our sandwiches, she always got bugs in hers. She had bought six or eight sandwiches for the family and we grabbed at random. As everyone has guessed by now, everyone's was fine except Gramma's, it had a huge caterpillar in it. She was so used to it she just flicked it off and kept eating.

I have participated in hundreds of raffles. After half a lifetime I finally won something of small value, less than a hundred dollars. I knew someone that had won two new pick-up trucks about six or eight years apart. Wouldn't surprise me if we bumped into each other and I learned he had won one or two more.

Some people the gods smile on, some they laugh at!

I 100% believe in manifestation. I've seen it far too often in my life. Your attitude, intent, desire, and vision impacts all areas of your life to include pool. If someone saw where I came from and where I am now they would also say I'm "lucky", and I would not argue with them.
