For many years I broke with the same cue I played with and it had a very soft tip on it.
I used a second ball break and always had good breaks and pocketed lots of balls and sometime the 8 ball in the side.
I don't need a rock hard tip for breaking as I like to have good control of the cue ball.
I am considering trying a Bulletproof hard tip for my break cue.
It's just a cheap cue I won at a league end of year drawing 30+ years ago.. cost about 100.00 at the time....
About the same time I bought my Meucci HOF 1 for 320.00
A member here recently sent me some hard tips to try out and I installed one on my break cue yesterday.
It was dark brown in color but turned light blue when shaped and sanded... might have been a water buffalo tip ??
The reason I don't do that is because I don't frequent the taverns anymore.
I basically shoot against a few of my friends that are all 500 and up, and then shoot in a Friday night tournament the second Friday of the month at a pool hall 40 miles from me.
Back in the day when I frequented the taverns on a regular basis I often played a game within the game.
I had a habit of playing the balls in in order such as 1 through 8, or 9 through 15 then the 8 ball when I played against someone on a lower level than I was.
It would be more of a challenge...
Which ones have you used?
I have not had that problem with their Ivory tips...
All tips get harder with use except maybe the bulletproof tips.
Thats just the nature of leather.
There are 3 different types of Ultraskin tips
*The black play very similar to the kamui black in all hardness ratings.
*I do not care for the Fire tips.
*The Ultraskin Ivory medium are currently my favorite layer tips.. they get a little firmer after break in and stay at the upper end of...
The average players I shoot with are mostly around the 540 - 550 range.
jason severson, terry schilling, travis arndt, and a few others....
there are some around the 500 mark, but I wouldn't consider them stud hustlers.
I would agree......
He was better than your average bar room hustler though ; )
I was not of his caliber - realistically I was probably around 600
In those days I lived in a Hotel above a bar and usually closed down the bar when my work day was over spending a good 4 to 6 hours playing pool daily.
Around central Wisconsin/North Central Wisconsin where I was weaned on pool I would venture to say 600 would be a better starting point.
Those days I watched Randy Lamar go to tournaments and shoot for whatever anyone wanted to shoot for in 9 ball in the adjoining bar all day while the...
My Fargo rate started at 397 and 9 Robustness after my first tournament...
It then went to 400 but stayed at 9 robustness after my next tournament ??
After the next 2 tournaments which I took 4'th, then 3'rd while beating a couple people with a 543 rating
my Rate has jumped to 504 with and...
