I used solid tips for many years and after coming out of retirement I installed an Ultraskin Ivory layered tip. By far the best tip I have ever used including the old Champions and others I tried back in the day.... They hold their shape extremely well and mushroom far less than single layered...

How does McDermott's Navigator Premium chalk compare to Toam?

I have done my own for many years, and amazingly very similar to how Dave does it in the video. I have a tool that sands the remaining residue from the tip off the ferrule and another tool that trims the side os the tip. I will however try his method of burnishing the side of the tip.

This is a result of not knowing how to properly use your equipment.... or a lack of ability to properly use it. Anyone with acquired knowledge and experience can tell the difference between a quality tip and a run of the mill tip. ;)

I don't really understand how some of todays cues can be called a Sneaky Pete when once they are screwed together they in no way resemble a bar cue. JMTC

Actually, I still have my original Eckes cue with the original ferrule on it. The only marks are a few scuffs from accidently rubbing the chalk on the ferrule.

I have been doing my own tips since 1976 and have never had an issue with damaging a ferrule. Why would an idiot pay someone else to do a job he can do for free?

I have tried several of the Ultraskin tips and so far I really like the Ivory Medium and Hard tips for my Meucci which is my normal playing cue. The Ivory tips hold chalk extremely well. I tried the fire Medium and soft but prefer the Ivory. Yesterday I installed a Black Pro on my old Eckes cue...
