Gold Crown VI

Biloxi Boy

Man With A Golden Arm
Anyone bought, or played on extensively, a new Gold Crown VI? Not interested in value analysis, comparison to Diamonds, etc. Not concerned with where the parts are made or the tables assembled. I am simply trying to determine the quality of the tables themselves -- do they play or not. As always, thank you all for the benefit of your experience and knowledge.

The current GC model, VI, how does it play? Sadly, new models of old products do not always run true -- they do not always get better or improve -- compare Browning's old Auto 5 to its newer shotgun models. Browning continues to make fine shotguns, but they do not compare to the old humpback. I am trying to, by inquiring of those with actual experience, determine how the new GC compares to older ones.

Here is the deal. I am going to buy a pool table. New, used, restored -- whatever I buy, I want to solve my problem once and for all, fini. I do not want to buy a table and then spend 3 or 4 years getting things "right". One only has to read the AZB threads about restored or reconditioned tables to realize the potential nightmares that abound -- one thinks it is over only to discover there are many new chapters of tribulation and woe to be endured. Pool is supposed to be fun, not a pain in the butt.

My latest idea is to buy a new GC VI, but, as I have said, I want to be reasonably certain that when I pay the money, my problem is solved.

Model choice is only one aspect of 'satisfaction'.

Find the best mechanic you can and see what he has to offer, both in table availability and knowledge about your prospective choices.

If i was going to spend that kind of $ i'd get a Diamond Professional. Every time.

I started targeting a GC6 but it did not work out. Ended up with the Diamond Professional and it is almost picture perfect. Regardless installation is everything. Be sure the installer is factory trained ala Simonis. I’m having the cloth redone. The set up is ok but the cloth application has flaws.

I hear you on this. Got my first table last year (a Chinese knock off GC V) - I was over the moon getting a table and have loved used it, but it's not perfect. There are some cosmetic issues (big deal for me, not for other I know), a few rolls, banks sound weird, etc...

Now I'm debating spending the money to have a mechanic come in and do it up right, or just get a brand new GC or Rasson...it's not something I plan on ever doing again, so just get it done right.

Anyway - good luck with your purchase!

Rasson seems to be a decent table and was available when I was looking to buy. And substantially cheaper than the Professional. As for servicing your current table…the best mechanics are backed up.

I went the restoration route with my Gold Crown I and would do it again. I did all the cosmetic work myself then hired a top line mechanic (IMO the best in CA) to extend the subrails, install new rubber and set it up. The end result is the best playing table I've ever played on that looks as good as it plays for substantially less than a new table. Were there some headaches along the way? Sure, there always are with projects but I'd be more upset if I forked out the $$$ for a brand new table that didn't shape up to the purchase price.

Yeah - definitely a massive savings on the Rasson, and I really like the look of the Challenger Plus (and the Victory), but like the OP, I'd like some first hand reviews before pulling the trigger. I don't know anyone with a one - posted here a while back and there doesn't seem to be anyone on here with one either.
