Have you ever had an old Dufferin sneaky pete (from Canada) converted?

I bet you do not see those old Dufferin sneakies around too often anymore. The ones with the nice BEM in the forearms are really nice (I think). Too bad they require a refinish in order to get the joint replaced (with like a 3/8x10 or 3/8x11 wood to wood joint for example). That is just too expensive (for me anyways, with all of the costs). They are really good for taking to any dive bar though (I imagine).
 
I wanted to add this to an existing Dufferin thread. I figured people would be thrilled with resurrecting a thread started by justinb386 as well. 🤪 :ROFLMAO:

I have several Dufferins in storage but came on these more recently. I didn't pay much attention to the ones I had in the past, just kept them. I don't even have any records or pics of them, so I don't even know what I have.
That has changed.

I got the butterfly recently on AZB which had the proprietary 5/16x14 Glider Joint pin (similar to the Pechauer Speed Joint) with a standard 5/16x14 pin. It came with a 28 inch shaft, but I have a like new 29 inch original that fits perfectly. And of course, other shafts now fit with the standard pin. I also got the middle cue and green leaf cue.

The butterfly cue plays excellent with the Dufferin 29 shaft, and of course Joss, Scruggs, etc. shafts..

Quiz: Do any of you know what that middle cue is? (Yes, I do.) The same Dufferin shafts do fit it, notice the pin is stainless and not brass though.

Does anybody have any idea if the Pechauer piloted Speed Joint shafts fit this pin? I have one, but it's in storage.

Does anybody know if the Dufferin Glider Joint is compatible with the Pechauer piloted Speed Joint?

In other words, will the Pechauer shaft fit the Dufferin butt?

I believe the Pechauer shaft is slightly fatter (0.850), but that could easily be turned down.

I was thinking the same, but I am not sure about changing the joint collar now. I like steel joint cues like my Joss, but these things play so darn well I am thinking to just do the pin change and otherwise leave them alone. The pin change is so easy I don't see any reason not to do it, the original shafts even still fit. The ebony cues are collectable, but not valuable enough to avoid messing around with.


I do wonder if the JP Speed Joint shafts fit the Dufferin pin though.
 
I had a Bluegrass made out of an old Dufferin. Richard had taken the maple leaf logo out and added his horse logo. Other than that, there were no other markings on it. I took it back to Richard for a refinish, new ferrule, and tip. He took a good look at it and told me it was one of the first twenty or twenty five cues he'd ever made. It was still straight as an arrow and played great. I ended up selling it to a buddy of mine who is good friends with Richard and I believe it ended up making its way to Colorado.

I've still got a Schick super sleeper that *might* have been made from a Dufferin. But it's more likely a Schmelke blank because it doesn't have the Duff logo window.
 
I have a 35-40 year old Dufferin that I use as a break cue. I had it turned down to 11.5mm and a black ring installed to distinguish it from a house cue. It's still straight as a die and if I put a decent tip on it I can use it as a player

The middle cue in my pictures is a snooker cue, ebony into maple, with the original brass ferrule 11mm snooker shaft in maple rather than ash. The Dufferin pool shafts fit it exactly. It is a little thinner in the butt than the pool cues, and light. I really dig that cue, but I have very small hands. Size 6.5 surgical glove.

Incidentally, the pool cues have the brass pin screwed into an aluminum butt insert, but this snooker cue has a stainless pin screwed directly into the wood.
 
One of the pool rooms I used to work at, had an old Dufferin one piece house cue from the 60's, and it was the only one I'd ever seen with a pro-taper...when the room closed, I asked the owner, who was a good friend of mine, if he'd sell it to me...he said, "Are you nuts?!?!?...just take the damn thing!!!"...I had a friend of mine cut it in half and put a piloted stainless steel joint, with a 5/16-14 pin...hits great...still have it...

The two piece cues had a pro taper available. It came standard on their top models, and the shafts were available separately.

They also had laminated shafts back in the 90's. I have one with the laminated shaft in storage.

i need to find out once and for all what the difference of any is in the dufferin vinatge 1980's cues that had different color of maple leafs in the butt sections.

I was told the red maple leaf cues had short splices in them

I was told the green maple lead cues were full splice cues

What is the difference if any of the colors of the maple leafs, is this a construction difference, where they were designed to be sold, US versus Canada, or nothing just design??

if you want it to be able to take all your shafts then match their joint and you will be happy. if not then do whatever but you are basically stuck with the original shaft which are not that great.
plus i dont like the pin in the shaft.
 
green just seem to be better cues. it may just be in my mind as you cant see a difference.

The pin is in the butt.

There are numerous aftermarket shafts that fit the Pechauer Speed Joint.
 
ii was talking about when someone keeps the original dufferin joint with pin in shaft. which i find stupid. as it limits you to thier shaft for the most part. unless keeping it pure is your preference.
