In a local tournament (with anywhere from 15-30 players in it) how many places does a typical calcutta pay out? Does winner take all, or do the first 3 spots get a cut of the calcutta?

My statement was how I ran the calcutta at a local pool hall many year's ago , I held a players meeting to talk about the pay out so they couldn't complain to much which they still did to an extent , my response was play better to win more !
The bar \ pool hall would donate some money as they knew they'd make it back in sales of drinks , food and table time .

Those were fun times !

Rest of story, please. No, let me guess. Payout not specified. When the dust settled, the Calcutta Director came up with a split that favored his friend (or someone who threw him some jelly) or disfavored his enemy. Moral of the Story: split should be set out in writing by Director and announced at beginning of auction.
A tale as old as time. It's a shame that more folks of unimpeachable integrity don't direct tournaments but I guess they have better things to do.

at 30 players i think 4 places paid for calcutta is fair, especially if theres a good amount of money
I'd be all for this or any other payout format as long as it was posted beforehand. Even if it states that the payouts will change based on the number of entries or calcutta money brought in, I'm fine with it because I know what I'm getting into. But being able to decide the day of the tournament how many places are going to be paid out opens the door to too much BS.

around here the pay out always is decided day of and never posted
its a general rule of thumb like 50 35 15
or if more 45 30 20 5
had any issues but i can see that others have
just depends on how many play and how much money is there

For the most part that's fine. You're dealing with tournaments where the majority of the players are probably regulars and know what's up. I guess what I was getting at is I'd be pretty honked off if the payout was magically changed to something nobody had ever seen before.

Calcutta is a waste of time. It's for degenerate gamblers. I'd rather go to a tournament with or even without an added $500. I don't give a rats ass about Calcutta. Last one I went into the pool and finished 4th. A local guy I know bought the "pool" and several other local greats. I was the only one that got him any Calcutta money. It's a joke. If you're known you go so high you have to win to cash out and if you're unknown you have no chance.

Waste of time for degenerate gamblers... I'm not judging, to each their own. Have fun at it but I ain't wasting my time.

The worst part is it holds up the tournament for at minimum 30 minutes, but usually closer to an hour. Then everyone has to go smoke so that counts into the waiting time. I show up on time ready to shoot some livers out, then have to wait for a shit show.;)

Liking to wager/gamble in no way makes you automatically a 'degenerate gambler'. Over the yrs some of the best events i've ever been to had calcuttas. They stimulate 'action' in general and often lead to good gambling matches after/during the event. The added time has never meant squat to me, i'm there to make some $$. A little extra time is no biggie. Last thing, every one i've ever been to had the calcutta payouts clearly listed,no funny business.

Quarter of the field or less
20 players pays 4 just like 16 ect

Can try to get 3rd and 4th to play for that money too.....technically paying 3rd and 4th not 3rd/4th

Good perspective. I could see that. I suppose it also signals to other players that you are open to action. Or, hey that guy from the county over said he is looking for action because (insert typical woofing). Thanks for the new perspective! :)
