Finally Made It To Evansville

In the ‘90s there was a bar called Breakers, that also had an elevated bar with brass railing. It was much larger than O’Brians.

As some will recall in a previous thread I was going to drive down to Evansville to the Washington Square Mall and play on their Diamond tables. I wanted to see how they compared to my Gold Crown IV.

Well, I finally made it to Evansville today. And what a waste of time. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The tables were in awful condition. The cloth was horrible. It was dirty, spotty, slow, etc, etc. And the lone 9-footer wouldn't even work. I had a guy helping me and he said the coin mechanism must be broke.

So I guess I am back to square one. Maybe I should just go and buy that Diamond Professional and get it over with. Either way, I would think a big city like Evansville would have had better tables to play on. That was simply pathetic.

I just received a diamond professional (8') three weeks ago. Got rid of an olhausen 8'. wow. I really, really like it.

If buying a new Diamond, I'd recommend the barbox. The shelves are not as deep as their 9' tables (the slate is cut differently, even with the 4.5" pro-cut pockets ordered on both). If your goal is to pretend you're a good player, the barbox will help immensely. Shorter shots make everything easier. I'm actually thinking of getting a barbox next. I'd rather have fun at the table than get frustrated. YMMV.
I wondered what your thoughts were on the Diamond barbox. I think those are a good test for players all the way up to about FR 750. Not sure I would ever want to spend my practice time on one, but if I had room for 2 tables I'd consider getting one.

I just bet against a 21yr old 622 playing the ghost on one last night. Race to 5 for cheap. First set he didn't get BIH. Ghost wins I think 5-1. Second set same. Maybe score was 5-2. Third set I let him move the CB 1 foot after the break. 5-3 I think. Last set double or nothing for everything. I gave him the true ghost this time, BIH after the break. He lost hill-hill.

I do like the Diamond barbox a lot. The thing is, the rail bounciness is still there, but I'm pretty used to it now. However, it's a byproduct of the room's atmosphere. I play in some rooms (the one last night), and the bounce is ok. Other rooms an hour away it's like a pinball machine. It just is what it is. That's my only main gripe about Diamond, always has been. It is a really well built table though.

The pockets on the 7' pro-cut are way better than the 9' pro-cut. The pocket shelf is shorter on the 7'. I wish the 9' had the same shelf. I think they'd be a lot more fun to play on in that case.

Man, I play in about 12-15 different places with Diamond barboxes and the only bouncy ones I have ever seen were red labels. A friend has a red label barbox in his basement and it doesn't play nearly as bouncy as the feral ones.

Hi, check out O'Brians next time you visit Evansville. Very nice pool hall.

I've been there before. But it's mostly 7-footers. Last time I was there they only had the one big table, the 9' Diamond ProAm. But usually there are alot of people at O'Brian's and it's hard to get on the big table. That's why I drove further into town to the Mall. I didn't think there would hardly be anybody there. And there wasn't. Including any tables worth a hoot to play on.

There has got to be a private table somewhere near you that you can try? I'd imagine most of the local players with a table in their house have bought a Diamond since the factory is so close. Have you asked forum members if anyone has one near you?
