Another stupid thread from me: golf is harder than pool

Cue sports is the only game where two round objects must be struck in order to score. That increases the degree of difficulty equation significantly.

I think it is harder to learn to play pretty good golf than it is to play pretty good pool. I'm guessing that it is harder to get to the very top in golf than it is to get to the very top in pool because there are so many more people trying to be golf champions than there are people trying to be pool champions.

the initial learning in golf is WAAAAY harder. You can get half-ass good in pool pretty quick. The fine tuning probably takes same amount of time in both games. Pool USED to be a lot cheaper to play but with current table times its not that far apart unless you're playing a hi-end golf track.

There isn’t any athleticism needed to become a great pool player because different skills are involved. But there’s going
to be people arguing differently why pool is a sport rather than a game but it’s because it sounds better but it isn’t true.
Wrong....

You can throw darts in there too. (pun intended)
I've played hockey, baseball, soccer, volleyball, bowled, long-ish range marksmanship, and of course pool. I still have no f-ing clue how those guys can smash the T20 repeatedly then hit any random double on the board like it's nothing...

Fun little backstory...

My Grandpa ran a small Brewery in Appleton, Wisconsin.

At 10, I worked part time that summer sweeping up around the brewery.

Across the street was a small tavern owned by Bob and Ellen Bleier, parents of Rocky Bleier, of Pittsburg Steelers fame.

After work, to my mother's great distress, grandpa would take me over to Bliers and we'd play a few games of pool and have a beer. Back then, if your grandpa said it was ok, they'd give you "a little beer for a little guy"...

That was the first place I ever shot pool and drank a beer in a bar. You don't forget memories like that!
I grew up in Powers Lake Wisconsin 53159. When I was 13 went to a bar and bought a 14 yr old girl a screwdriver. I liked the name, and it burned down the next yr. :)

I remember Earl Saying pools harder than golf ys ago.
I know Grady Matthews once said to get good you have to hit at least 2,000,000 pool balls.
In golf, if you hit two million balls, you better be in Dam good shape, as I've heard many pro golfers often need some type of surgery.

I was a decent golfer ~10-12 handicap. I quit for many years and tried to take it back up. Shanked everything, not long after was when I discovered that my left shoulder was gone, no rotator cuff movement and a 3 inch bone spur. Now closing in on a year after shoulder replacement surgery I need to go hit the range and see if I'm still shanking everything.

You can teach someone the basics of pool and get them to hit some passable shots in a couple hours. Good luck doing that on the golf course. This shouldn’t even be a debate.

The only moving part in a decent pool stroke is the forearm.
I could hit a golf ball pretty well the very first time I tried. But I wasn't any better the last time I tried when I said screw this game I'm going inside to play pool.

When I was 10 and my dad took me to a golf course it was the same deal. I could hit the the ball down the course just fine with some basic instruction.

I think you're over-estimating the +4 hcp. 800 Fargo is top 70 in the entire world. A +4 hcp might get you on a decent D1 college team, but not anywhere near a PGA tour card these days.

I'd guess scratch to be somewhere in the 650ish range. Admittedly based on nothing more than my own observations.

FWIW and for perspective, I played to an index of 3.9 until about age 60, and at 68 my current Fargo is 560. Decent, but neither anything special.
This seems about right. Look at the Fargo lists for players in that 730-770 range. Many strong players, just look at the top 100 USA list. I would say these players are all better than the typical local scratch golfer. Different games etc…. Maybe 600 2-4 hcp, 650 scratch, 700 +2? Not sure
