DICK VAN DYKE GETS HUSTLED

dick van dyke did play some pool but not real well. jack klugman told me he did play some. we talked horses as he was into them.
he had one or so at one time. his horse came in 3rd or 4th at one kentucky derby.
then played pool. he played well. but didn't take it down. he liked gambling.
i never got an in with him as he was like 30 or so years older than me.

NY Blackie came through SoCal with Mary Kenniston while I was still around to pay attention. They had some guys down playing golf. Not a great watch. Don't know what happened. Prolly scored.

i got to watch blackie play at the sports palace in new orleans in the early 1970's
since you brought his name up here is an interview with him
i dont mean to sidetrack my own thread ha ha
so carry on about dick van dyke getting hustled

Its funny how different things are now compared to the past and how it seems to be so notable to see 2 rifles hanging on the wall for decor, it would be OK if it was a perp brandishing a weapon but its definitely not OK to put a weapon of death on display as decor.

blackie was a terrific player but seemed to find ways to get broke to someone. i ran into him in the pacific northwest way back when he was still good. he made money up there as almost no one was his speed. but bar action was incredible. stayed out of his way and he was on the shorts anyway. you couldn't lock him up in a game anyway so not worth trying. he liked to go broke playing even with someone better than him.
in california there were too many top players to keep him broke. but he beat many easily. he did okay at bellflower though.
i did see him in san jose for a time. he got beat there and also won some. most stayed out of his way as they do for most big named players.
he beat billy ray sudan for a bunch. no one liked that guy.

after he left back to the east coast and south i dont remember any real big scores from him. just some good stories.
by the time he left 7 11 the games dried up there and only fools played that had no chance. best collection of world class players in one pool room that no one ever heard of. all you knew were their nicknames.

Why do so many depictions of pool have such obvious rule violations? I mean, they could have conveyed the hustling with accurate pool playing. Likely because most people would never recognize the errors. Just like nearly all movies. Sigh.
