Burton Spain photos

Absolutely no problem Chris! The pics are great, thanks very much for posting them!

I've seen (even due to this thread of course! :)) many Burton cues and there wasn't any with this kind of ring work! Amazing!

As for getting the picture smaller: right click on the image - go for 'Edit' -> (now it Paint opens it) -> In the upper line go for 'Image' -> Stretch/Skew. You may resize them there. I hope that I could help! Thanks for the picture!

Poohkiller,
We share your enthusiasm for this very under appreciated cuemaker. Because of your enthusiasm if you would like copies of both books and brochures e-mail me your address. We will be happy to send them to you, because of your appreciation for Burton and his work.

Thank You!!!

Dear Mark,

Firstly please let me apologize for my delayed answer but I just got home today (it's 2059 here) and I haven't had time to answer.

Secondly I would like to thank you very-very much for this opportunity and I just can't tell you how glad I am that I found so many people who are thinking the same like I do - regarding Burton Spain.

I am exceedingly interested and I can't wait to see those books, thank you very much!!

I am going to write a PM now and send it to you right away,
Thank you very much once again!

David Bredan

I am very glad that you enjoyed this thread and that you got inspiration from it; I hope that if anyone comes across any information or other things regarding Burton Spain will share it here with us - just to expand an already great thread! ;o)

Paradise, another cuemaker that did not make his own blanks

The top is the original reverse splice. Second is a more traditional cue and the third is the nutz. Ebony/ebony splice.

I always feel blessed when I see this thread is still alive... And I'm even happier when I see works like those...
I always loved Palmer cues and through them I got a bit more into Paradise cues as well and I like them almost as much as the Palmers. I don't know if I'm correct but I feel like as if I saw that bottom cue in the BBOC 3rd Edition, in the color section (I'll have to find my book, I was reading it a few days ago and I put it down somewhere)

If anyone looking for a few pictures of other great cues (including these three too), please let me post a link :)

Thank you for the pictures, those cues are truly amazing.

Well, I can't tell you for how long have I been waiting to post this comment but finally the time has come and I can assure you that every single minute of the waiting was well worth it!

Today, just about a quarter hour ago I received my package from Mark Kulungian! As you might have read on this thread he offered me that he would send me materials regarding (who else:)) Burton Spain!!!

I got so valuable and so many things that I still am sitting here with all the stuff around me and I truly don't know which one to pick and start reading!! Everything is sound and is perfect and I can't thank Mark enough times all the things he has done to me!

Thank you everybody who has posted into this thread, I have found all the pictures and all the datas very-very informative and important, I hope that you will keep on sharing all your knowledge here with me and with each other!

Thank you very-very much once again!

You are very welcome. Sorry we couldn't do much on color photos of cues, but if Mark can find the brochures I am sure I will shoot you one. We are going to make a concerted effort to post some very interesting things that Mark has stored away. This will do a few things, one is to reestablish, or reintroduce Mark to people who do not realize he just isn't a cue flipper, he has a lifelong stake in the billiards industry. This is all he has ever done, not some Johnny come lately who flips a few cues and think he knows everything there is to know about cues.

Expect to see a lot of things on the site... history, repost some long lost articles, and just some fun, fun stuff.

I was lucky enough to exprerience all that! Mark has sent me (along with many-many other great stuff) an InsidePOOL magazine (October, 2002) in which there's an interview with him - the article tells pretty much about him and what he has achieved!
He is not only a great collector with exceptional taste for cues but he is a very remarkable player too (just to quote one single line: 'he was crowned 1995-96 US National Amateur 8-Ball Champion at the APA Grand Prix Toruney'. WOW!

The article mentions how he started playing pool and dealing/collecting cues which is very impressive too! He provided technical advices for many books regarding pool cues (BBOC, The Pool Cue Book, The Billiard Encyclopedia) I hope everyone (and I do mean: everyone) will get to know him because he can do A LOT for all of us here. I am very glad that I got to know him and I hope we'll keep in touch in the future too - and one day I'll be able to send him something too ;)

Thank you again and take care!

Hello Everyone again,

I thought I'll bump this thread up because I've been thinking about doing so for quite some time now and the time has come, I believe.

I re-read this thread and have seen all the great things you shared with me and each other. I remember almost everything you wrote, I learnt it by heart as there are many good information and valuable opinions however it is good to read it again sometimes.

As you can see in my signature, I received the package (long time ago) that Mark has sent me. You may see the two articles of Burton. Those are in about mint condition, however I've read those many times also.

I hope we can share something new about this remarkable man. I found the Chicago Area Mensa's site which says that Burton was awarded in 1988 among with others for his outstanding and long lasting work.

I tried to acquire a few pictures of his shop or even the street of it (West Division Street in Chicago) but I did not manage to do so. It would be great to hear stories from those who had the fortune to meet him and to talk with him. I ran into a few stories about meeting Herman Rambow and a few others but I didn't hear anyone's story of meeting Spain.

Thank You,
David Bredan

P.S.: and of course, as always, I'd like to see pictures of his work too!

You might want to send an email to Pjimandbon@aol.com, Jim Parker, the owner of the Illinois Billiard Club. Mention that you would love to get any information you could about Burton. Burton was a member and a good friend of Jim's. He said they used to talk for hours on the phone. He has plenty of memorabilia around and if you can get Jim talking and he has the time he will go on forever.

Were you able to get through to Jim??

Have you read "Making Blanks" by Burton?

Jeeez, I wanted to write you an answer many days ago! I always forget something even if I think of it regularly.

I sent him a mail on that very day you gave me his address and I thought I thanked you for the info. It was very rude of me not thanking you the e-mail adress, please excuse me - but I am busier than ever in my life :( (school leaving exams :().

So, I wrote him a letter but he did not answer it. I think I'll try again soon, as I did not get any reply. He must be very busy but I hope he will answer to a second e-mail.

As for the book: Yes, I have read it as I have a copy of that and the other book of him. I got both of them and a couple other things from Mark Kulungian of Pool Table Magic. You may find a link to the picture of what I have in my signature.

Thank you so much for your question,

You did thank me but I was curious as to whether or not you heard back from Jim. He is very busy running a catering and banquet business, running the leagues in the Illinois Billiard Club, maintaining the premises, etc. Our session is ending and he had a lot of makeups to play and they last close to 5 hours each. In addition, he has had some health concerns and his wife is recuperating from multiple fractures in her leg.

He has plenty to tell you, if he gets time to come up for air.

Keep trying and I will mention it to him.

I was at Joel Hercek's shop last week and interviewed him for an upcoming "Behind The Cue" segment. We spoke a lot about Burton and I shot some photos of Burton and himself during the training that Joel keeps in the wall above one of his lathes.

These will be included in the next show which I hope to edit in the next few weeks. I also interviewed John Davis the day before and we spoke a lot about his cues and his work with Burton. Once the show is ready i will post a link here.

Cheers,
Mike

Mike: Was this ever done? thanks.

Dennis

Dennis,

Thank you very much for mentioning it to him. Yesterday when I wanted to write him again he already answered my first mail.

He was VERY kind and he told me how much work do they have left and how busy they are right now but he assured me that he'll write when time permits - nevertheless he did tell me a few things in advance.

I truly can't wait until he writes a longer letter - but I have to be patient.

Thank you very much and I'll keep you up-to-date.

Thanks Willie,
That cue definitely looks great too!

I love this butt sleeve very-very much! Any guesses on what wood is it made of? ( I have a thought, but I am probably wrong, so... let me now if any of you have an idea! Thanks! :-))

I'm fairly positive that wood is macassar ebony. My father's cue is almost identical to the one pictured, only with brass rings, and the butt material is identified as such in the paperwork from Burt. I'll try to post some pics if I can get some shot.

Hope this helps,
EtDM

Here are a few shots of the above mentioned cue, circa 1978.

I had the extraordinary pleasure of meeting Burton once, at a very early age. He didn't apparently have his own table, and would occasionally call my dad to come out to my house and shoot on occasion. I remember him being very personable, even though it was a long, long time ago (I was maybe 6 or 7). To this day I regret not buying one of his cues as my first real cue, when I was in 7th grade or so. My dad got one of his catalogs, and I remember looking at it with great interest, but I couldn't afford the $450 he was charging at the time for a simple cue...

If I only knew!

EtDM: thank you very much for your reply! Honestly, it is great to see your first two posts had been made to this thread.

Your input and those pictures of such an amazing cue are greatly appreciated!

You know, I wish I could get a B. Spain cue for $450 now... or $1450... I guess I'd be all over it!

Welcome to AZB and rep for you :)

1000th POST :)

Hello all once again,

This is my 1000th post and I would like to move this thread up to sight with it. I believe that this has been my best thread I created on this or any other board with so many participating and sharing very valuable information about my favourite cue maker.

I would like to thank you all for your help once again.

I hope I will have a few more thousand posts here regarding cues and will make even more friends on here.

Have a very nice day,
Sincerely,
David Bredan
