Now that we're done with making fun of Johnny Archer, I figured it was time for a thread on a new payment controversy.

Aden Joseph, one of the top African pool players, organized a tournament in South Africa called Ghost Nation. It promised a R500k (~$30k USD) prize pool, so about the scale of a Matchroom Ranking event. After the tournament concluded, a bunch of players complained about not getting paid. Today, the organizer explained that a sponsor pulled out of of the event at the last minute and he decided to try to make up the funding gap via gambling 😂

Is this part of a three way with the guys who threw matches weeks ago. I thought most were people on here were being too lenient on them, but where this guys from, i think they cut off hands for less.
What is happening to the pool culture these days?

That excuse is not nearly creative enough....

A new in-house league started near me, so I joined to help support it. About the final week, the room owner had bad news: someone had gotten into his safe and taken all the league funds, so no prizes. Seems they only took the league funds. Also no police report. So sorry.

yeah, similar story here in Atlanta about1995, local room is running a small dollar cash 8 ball team league. gets to the end and the payoff is about a third of what it should be. Me....being a financial auditor, told him hey, x teams for x weeks at x dollars a week equals a pot of xxx dollars, not xx dollars. We won the league so we get XX dollars, pay up, I don't care what lies you can get the other chumps to believe.

They should beat every nickel out of this guy, and then kick his ass again, just for good measure.

These stories could go on forever. Played in a match play challenge, at my local course. Big group, not a huge amount of money, but well over four figures. After winning, was told the fees were kept in an envelope be hind the cash register. The owner, his wife, and stepdaughter were the only ones that ever worked behind the bar. They claimed the envelope was stolen. A few years later, won the summer league, clubhouse burns down. I was told the prize money was in the office, and got burned up🤣

But don't worry... He's "faced the consequences of his actions, including criticism from the community. "

What a joke. Criticism should be the absolute least of his worries. I'm not sure that he could ever "rebuild trust within the pool community."

I played in one of the santa clara county bar leagues a few years back. The guy who was running the league, collecting the money, decided to spend all of it. Something like $8K. Gone.

my small home town in Illinois, about 2000 pop. there was a woman who always wanted to be around the money, Little League, Girl Scout cookies, summer camps, etc. to the point that the town wised up and just didn't let "Betty" be the treasurer anymore. she never stole it all, but a hundred here, hundred there kind of thing.

My son dated a gal the same way, waitress/server only took jobs where she "handled the cash", cheated the owner, short-changed customers, especially after a few drinks, etc. the gal's mother was the same way, but she worked "front office" in medical places, stole from petty cash, but her real prize was access to the Rx drugs.

but the prize money was not his and those other ones where the safe and envelop disappeared is fraud or theft. call the police and bring them in.

and certainly whomever held the money is responsible for it. just because someone stole it from you does not mean you are off the hook for it.

the gambler guy might be telling the truth. but is still responsible and they should also go after those that didnt pay off as sponsors.
in africa things are different i suppose. but there the authorities may be more forceful.

SHI* Happens like, In April of 2008, Phoenix had the Desert Shootout.

anyone can get in over their head making some dumb mistakes. cant fault someone for it.

it is what they do after that, that defines them as a person.

a bad rep will follow you forever. a good rep. can change very quickly.

How many times can you name a PGA Event Winners did not get paid?

How many time have we reading in last 20 years some Pool Player got stiffed after winning tournament, or rubber check.

Will keep happing until all of pool is under one group who has scruples.

you think an independent tournament in bantuville, south africa, a failed state, would ever be the equivalent of a PGA event?

My point is when was last time you heard of PGA winner stiffed, or a NASCAR, NHRA, NBA, NFL, MLB, or NHL Player getting rubber or no check?

Pool is it had one group scanting it, escrowing, or guaranteeing money this BS would stop.

Until them Pool players are at the mercy of dishonest promotors, bar owners, or room owners.
