Cues that play similar to Southwest Cues

i think taiwan has the lowest crime rate in the world, or close to it. but still, a 30k cue is insane to travel around with.

The TSA agent reading this thread is already doing his christmas shopping lol.

Continental "lost" a Schon of mine of right after I got it back from Proficient for a complete restore. All other bags showed up just fine, including the bag that the cue case was placed inside of. Got paid out what I bought it for it like 8 months later, but had to eat the Proficient refinish costs.

The SW I've tried were very attractive, well made cues, IMO. I felt they pocketed balls, and controlled the CB, about the same as dozens of other brands .

Main reason it cost 30K USD is the Gold inlays all over the thing.

he's a brave man to put that into checked luggage.

I liked the South West cues I've played. They balance well and have a solid feel. If you don't like a stiff cue or are a diehard steel joint/thick butt user, they might not be for you. Don't think they are magic though, and it's common for people to who lay out that kind of money for one to feel that way, whether it's cues, watches, cars.

If buying a cue solely for playability, without regard for looks, resale, collectability, brand reputation, etc., they are many other cues that perform similarly I think. These days around $1,000 on the used market should get you one in good condition if you search well.

I bought my first South West a few years ago out of curiosity. I wanted to know what the hype was all about.

I wasn't shooting pool on a regular basis. When I was shooting pool, I played with an older 19oz Tim Scruggs. So, playing with a 21oz SW was very different. I didn't like it. It was too heavy.

I eventually joined a pool league. I picked up my TS, along with the SW and a few other cues in my collection to see what I liked. The TS was my choice.

When I went through a streak of losing games, I did what most would do. Blame it on everything else except for me. I switched from the TS to the SW.

This time I had a better appreciation for the stiff South West hit. My game slightly improved, but only with practice. To my surprise, South West Cues are not magic wands.

I can't tell which cues feel like a SW, but I can definitely tell you what my SW doesn't feel like when comparing it to other cues in my small collection. It does not feel like a Scruggs, Runde Schon, Richard Black, Dayton, and few others I have.

buy the ones that fit how you want them to. not the brand or looks, or price.

Rick Howard and Mike Stacey both make SW-style cues that, imo, play light-years better. Another sweet SW-style cue is the old Lycos made by Taican/Universal. Tough to find now.
