Saw this on Facebook. Kentucky honored Nick as the greatest all around pool player ever in the U.S.

Thought I would pass it along.

Because the signatories are ridiculous people who did this entirely for show?

Bureaucrats love a parade they didn't march in. They need something shiny to staple to their newsletters so they can pretend they have a pulse on culture, so they rubber-stamp a plaque for a guy who was actually legit, just to soak up some of his residual paint.

We all know how good Varner was. This is show.

Thats how politicians work
The award is well deserved(imho)
And your political irritation about it
should be directed at the ones who signed it
Post complaints to them or forums where they will see it
And not make nick the victim
Give nick the kudos he deserves?

You're quite right. I have let my (somewhat intoxicated) irritation get the better of me. Instead of deleting, I will apologize & bow out of the thread.
 
I agree that Nick is one of the greatest all-around players we have seen.

The problem I have is the "organization" that created a whole series of billiard awards. Here's their website:

I suspect the whole thing was generated by AI. I have never heard of anyone on the "advisory committee". And I strongly disagree with some of their choices.
 
Congratulations to Nick. At bare minimum, he was as good an all-around player as we've seen. Still, restricting attentions to those of his era, both Sigel and Lassiter were probably comparable as all-around cueists. If three cushion billiards is included in the assessment, Harold Worst is also in the conversation.

Whether he's better than a) SVB (3 DCC Master of Table, World 9ball Champ, World 8ball Champ), b) Fedor Gorst (3 Derby City Master of Table, World 9ball Champ), or c) Josh Filler (Derby City Master of Table, World 9ball Champ, World 8ball Champ, American 14.1 Champ, European 14.1 Champ, World Games Gold Medalist) is a debate for another day.

Bottom line here, though, is that Nick was an all-around player of the highest pedigree and this recognition was hard earned and is well deserved. Bravo, Nick.

I’d like to throw Jim rempe”s hat Into the ring. I don’t think he gets mentioned enough when it comes to all-around greats
 
sigel, lassiter and rempe all of which were among the best ever, lacked a top one pocket speed which was played often in their time.
yet kelly which could beat them all at any time is rarely mentioned.
varner excelled at all the games. and especially at one pocket. yet he single handily ruined the viewing of it with his slow play.

FYI, Luther Lassiter was 1969 One Pocket Champion at Johnston City. Yes, it pales by comparison to his five Johnston City 9ball titles, 5 Johnston City straight pool titles, and 4 All-around titles.

FYI, Rempe was 1971 Johnston City one pocket champion.

No idea why one pocket speed would be the most important measure of a player's all-around skills anyway. Sigel is surely the only player that can be counted among the five best ever at both straight pool and 9ball. Jay Helfert has offered that he was quite capable at all the games and that he considers Mike to have been a better all-around player than Nick.
 
of course they would play all games well but those did not play top speed.
i use one pocket as a speed rating for me as it uses all the shots in pool and quality thinking as well.

if just straight shooting one pocket isnt about that.

Nick was rightfully proud of this commendation and shared it on Facebook. DCP was nice enough to share it with the forum. This was, simply, the Kentucky House of Representatives celebrating one of their own, the Kentucky Colonel, Nick Varner, for his tremendous career in pocket billiards.
