Is it time to play one pocket??

no one any good is going to play without betting, so plan on betting.

its a slow gambling game and players that dont gamble and play under some pressure never get good. and its stupid to play for nothing as why not take risky shots.
There's a wealth of pool in those value added shots. Double edged sword.

My whole purpose of wanting to learn this game.
Green Shtuff.😉
Always one hole action where I play. The older, more experienced players gravitate towards one pocket, so... It's time.

I talked the guys into playing 11 ball one pocket and some rooms now are having events.
Me.... having some skin in the game is best for improving, not many of us get better and better just hitting balls w/o cost.
It's not the money to me as much as it is other things, like my opponents character.
I'll gladly give a spot to make the game friendly and keep the bet real.
If the bet is too low, it doesn't help my concentration. If I can make 20 an hour getting better that's fine. Plus no table time :).

It is the most creative of all pool games. It has a lot more to do with creating pressure over many innings than it does running out.

You build an offense and try not to lose control of it, and try to force your opponent to make a mistake. It does require patience.
A nice summary of what playing against a good player feels like.

The fastest way to learn One Pocket is to play partners with coaching allowed. Make sure each side has one good player. Don't take all day to make a shot selection or it gets boring for everyone and don't coach on each shot.

It would help if you take a photo of some shots to practice them later.

I learned a ton about the game by watching matches and hitting the pause button before every shot and tried to guess what the player was going to do. Seek out the matches with Billy Incardona commentating.

It is a game worth studying away from the table, and then trying to access what you learned on the table under pressure. That is harder than it sounds.

Ten ball rack, then Mike Massey said you put the 11th ball in line with the head ball frozen to the two upper balls.

Hello players.
I'm looking for solid reasons to learn more about one pocket.
I've played it some, but never saw or found the magic in it that I've often heard other players describe. I keep hearing it's the 'chess of pool.'
I love chess, but there's 6 holes on a table and I need every damn one of them!!
Perhaps it's a patience issue??
I do play fast and I can make a ball or three.
Appreciate any thoughtful comments.
I believe it's time.
It's obvious I'm missing out on something here.

The first reason to play 1pocket is that it's a fascinating game filled with offensive and defensive opportunities other games do not present.

At the outset you will be forced to play bunt 1pocket because you do not have the skill set to shoot the more advanced offensive/defensive shots nor take the risks involved with playing position off some shots, banks, and safeties. However, once you gain those skills it is hugely rewarding to torture your opponent and watch them squirm ;-)

1. There are specialty shots in 1P that become hangers. They can help more than you would think in other games.
2. You get practice on banks, z shots, 2 rail, 3 rail, "crazy" shots. Even safety involving multiple balls and straight pool like breakouts.
3. It teaches you to keep the rock safe and leave your opponent nothing. It's easier to truly learn in 1P and carries over to other games.
4. Teaches Patience.
5. Teaches Strategy (and oddball stuff that doesn't come up in other games, but can be used once you understand them)
6. It's fun.
7. New clientele for gambling if you participate.

EDIT:
8. Teaches you moves. Moves win matches. There is a certain satisfaction seeing your opponent squirm and forcing them into a mistake.

basically you can control your opponent in one pocket unlike other games. some in 8 ball.

same as all games the better player wins.

its attraction is it is easier to make a game with someone. and bad players get to the table many times each game and dont sit in a chair watching someone run out.

along with utilizing all the skills in pools.

Everyday is a great day. If health is not an issue...gotta love what comes out of a day in the life. At my age I'm happy taking a good sh.. but do not gamble how great it will or will be.

You pay your instructor, right? If you play a good 1P player for $20 a rack, you will probably lose every rack, but one of the racks may take an hour. When you play a good player and gamble $20 rack, you are similarly paying for a lesson.

Someone told a really good 1P player that I was looking to play 1P. He couldn't really find any players that wanted to play 1P, so he was excited to play. We talked about a spot, and he was a little hesitant about how many balls to spot me seeing as he did not know me. After we arranged the spot, the number of racks and the bet per rack, I handed him all the money. He said, "What's this?" I said, "That's what you are going to win."

The difference in taking a lesson and gambling to learn is you can ask questions and try shots again in a lesson

I do not go to pool rooms. I have a table. The rooms that I was going to had guys that would play cheap sets and I be would ok with that. Would be fun for a few hours with a small wager. I'm not looking to make money ..just something to make it interesting. Would gladly pay for time and maybe a snack. That's just me. To be honest I have reasons for not playing for cash. I'm 100% content doing what I have been doing and will say again and again to newbies that gambling is not required to become a good 1player.
I did play set with Karen Corr and game or 2 with Joanne Parker... I was doing great for 3 innings🤣
