They need to do a sequel with Cruise as the stake horse and a young girl he teaches to hustle. Sydney Sweeney as the trainee trying to stay undercover as the natural, perhaps.
It would sure cost less to make than the Days of Thunder sequel he is doing.

I'd give it a 2. The Hustler was a 10.
Neuman should have got an academy award in 1961, Instead of a pity award in 1986.

i concur. but will admit that cruise prancing around and twirling his cue like an idiot increased public interest in pool

P.S. I can’t tell you how many times I realize a movie is 40+ years old, or even worse, a well-recorded music selection played on a high-resolving 2-channel system, looking it up, and, rediscovering, $h!+, the damned favorite cut WAS RECORDED 50+ YEARS AGO!! Wasn’t that just, like 15 years ago?

Youth: enjoy it while you are young. Before you realize it your GRANDDAUGHTER is a freshman at university.

What he said, in Spades!

The movie was great for the billiard industry. I was working in a pool hall at the time. It was impossible to obtain cues, chalk, and anything else pool related. Everything was going to Japan. The movie was a big hit there. Bowling alleys were converted to pool halls. After a few years the fad died out and things returned to normal.

And I was 34 living in Palo Alto playing pool in a bar on California Ave called Antonio’s Nut House.
Owner Tony Mantooth had an automated gorilla in a cage. You put in a quarter and the gorilla would scoop out a basket of peanuts and hand it to you through the food door of the cage.

Fun place to hang out with a quarter bar box!

RIP to the nuthouse, but the gorilla lives
