These seem like cueball target drills to me. You set up a shot and set a target for the cue ball and attempt to leave it there. Each time you set up the shot move the target.

I will say the 1p rule change (which is obviously for expediency of the matches) is far more radical. There have been recent big tournaments played under those 9 ball rules. I've never seen 1p played that way (though ive heard of it), and I imagine it has a huge impact on strategy and gameplay...

I think they are only obsolete if you're cue has the capability to accept a screw in extension. I had a similar product before Pechauer came out with their extension that fit my cue. The downsides were that it was much heavier, larger, harder to transport, and uglier than my screw in extension...
