A Closer look at L.D. Shafts

About Shaft Wood About Shaft Wood, I hate to stereo type LD Shafts, Pro Taper Shafts, Conical or European Taper Shaft or Regular Shafts. When comparing one of these shafts to another remember that no two shafts are exactly the same. They all have their own characteristics even if they are the...

Video on AZ? Any one know if you can post a video in a thread here on AZ like you can a photo? I know you can on Face Book. This sure would be a great feature for AZ and would help show and explain your point.

Yes, this sound like a good idea. I would like to get them involved for sure. I am not sure if you read earlier in this post but I have been working with some real creditable people in physics and an engineer also off and on for the last year. You say Patrick has made a shaft that produces less...

Yes. And the arm is at 90 degrees at contact in each case hitting the same spot on the cue ball.

A Closer look at L.D. Shafts

Yes, but I had to do this on about 5 different shaft because the first conical tapered shaft had a 12mm tip end. I still put a pro taper on it but then it was so flimsy so I made a few more to make sure the test results were were accurate and not being influenced by a real flexible shaft. The...

A Closer look at L.D. Shafts

Hi Patrick, Yes I have. In fact I test all she shafts unmodified as once I modify them I could not go back and test them in the unmodified state. So the first thing I always do it test the shaft first to establish a base line and a beginning or starting point. Then every thing that happens after...

Stiff VS. Flexable I would like to touch up on this a bit. When I say a stiff shaft squirts more I need to go further on this. Here is what I did and also how I can prove it. I took a stiff shaft and put it in the dyno. I recorded the results. I tested it at different speeds with different...

Really, May I ask why? I just thought that it might be helpful and I thought that I would try to give something back to pool. If many of you feel this way please let me know. I will spend the time that I am investing here playing pool or with my family.

Well I have two machines that I use and there both pictured at the beginning of this thread. I tested different bridge lengths on the robot or dyno. This machine is the holy grail. It tell you what is better but you have to figure out why. The stiffness tester tell you what is more flexible. It...

He is right here guys. Also the stiffer shaft is like the heavy guy. The stiff shaft does not want to move so it shoves the cue ball. The cue ball has no support so it squirts.

Thanks for the kind words Joey. You are welcome to believe what you want as well as others. But if you come down here I can prove to you a stiffer shaft does produce way more squirt. Yep, I said way more. Bob Meucci is correct when he says this. I thought he was full of it but it turns out he is...

A Closer look at L.D. Shafts

You can't stereo type laminated shafts or solid wood shafts. Every laminated shaft and solid wood shaft play and test different. You can however find a solid wood shaft and make it play just like a laminated shaft or vise versa.

No, surprisingly it did not. I thought moving the flex point closer to the tip would reduce squirt. I tried it in inch increments from the tip back to 24". What happens is the bridge is so close to the tip and makes this area stiff as a board. Want a flexible shaft to play stiffer, just shorten...

Your statement above "Scientific testing would take into consideration all the variables that are encountered in the real world of shot making and not just one set of testing parameters" I could not agree more. You are absolutely right and that is just what we did. The only time I use the same...

A Closer look at L.D. Shafts

Here it is in a nut shell. Well I wish I could say this was true. And for me being a cue builder, I really wish it was true because a stiffer shaft has less tendency to warp and can be turned faster. Flexible shafts have to be turned much slower with finer cuts and needs to be made out of the...

Ya, I hate these skinny shafts too. Keep in mind a few things here. Just because it's 12mm doesn't mean it is flexible. Before I made the stiffness tester I thought the same as you. But the fact is I turned down a shaft to 10.4mm thinking it would be super flexible. I would hate to play with...
