Whats the best Gold Crown, and whats the worst? Please explain.

The GC3 was definitely a step down for Brunswick. The one's and two's were built very heavy and I believe played better. The newer GCs use a cheaper rubber as well, nothing like the gum rubber that was used in the 60s. The Diamond tables have the Artemis rubber, and it is far superior to...

Wayne Norcross' high run in 14.1 straight pool?

    Wayne's high run is 211, I believe. I've seen him run numerous 150s and a 175.

    Best magazine subscription?

Billiards Digest has been the best publication for 30 years. Great, well written articles. My opinion.

One of Danny K's tables for sale

Professional size table with new rubber and cloth, from Danny K's Billiards in Orange. We had to make room for more sports viewing. This table looks brand new, plays great and would be a nice furniture piece in any living room or den. $2200.00 go to dannyks.com and view a photo on the web site...

    Good books to read.

I would rate Playing Off the Rail as the best pool book ever written, followed by Running the Table. Both very well written. Pool Wars is also a great read.

Hustling / Was Eddie a dirtbag in TCOM?

The Hustler had a much deeper story and moral thanTCOM. In the end of the Hustler, Eddie seems to reach a more mature sense of consciousness, and therefore begins to listen to his conscience. Who knows if that Eddie would have ever hustled again? The older Eddie created by Walter Tevis doesn't...

    Areil Caramelli Opinion Needed ???

Ariel makes a fine cue. He played in my in-house league for several years and sold a lot of cues out of my room. I played with one for a couple of years and really liked it.

President Lincoln First Billiards Game 18?? Newpaper article

Great read about Lincoln. He was a very kind and gently man with a lot of insight about life. And, he was a republican!

    Where is Don Mackey now?

Sorry, Daveb, I know you're joking, but what Mackey did to the pro tour was unforgivable. He took over a pretty good operation and sold the players a bill of goods, that with him everyone would make tons of money, and then basically ran it into the toilet, and who knows how much money he himself...

    Is business finally picking up?

One problem is you still have about 10 % unemployment throughout the US. These people will not spend a lot of money on pool until they're working again. I don't look for a comeback to the way things were a couple of years ago, but maybe some loosening of the dollars working folks have because...

Weldon Rogers Stories....Would love to hear em!!!

I was living in Sierra Vista, AZ in 1968, next to Ft Huachuca, an army base with an AIT camp where young guys would train to go to Nam. One of the guys was a hell of a player. His name was Joe Louis, a tall black guy with a scar on his throat like it had been slit at one time. We took him to...

just goes to show how spectacular Buddy really was at that time.

    Louie Roberts Titles?

I believe one of Louie's mistakes with Buddy was always playing on Buddy's table. Buddy would give anyone the 7 on Buddy's table in Shreveport. Anyone know of a time when they played somewhere else and Louie got the 7?

Scott Frost $10,000 One Pocket Challenge!

Give Efren a couple of hours on the table and I don't think there will be much of an advantage any more for Scott. I've seen Efren adapt to almost anything. In the eighties at a pool room named the Orange County Sports Arena, tournaments were played on cheap Murray tables. A particular pocket...

Scott Frost $10,000 One Pocket Challenge!

Wouldn't Efren love to play Scott at Kolby's race to 21 for 10 grand? I know an offer was made for neutral ground, but that has obviously changed. Isn't Efren still a favorite even at Kolby's? If I were Efren's backers I would make the game at Kolbys. With Efren's experience and knowledge of...

Scott Frost $10,000 One Pocket Challenge!

Main Street Billiards in Tucson is a nice room with plenty of Gold Crowns. I just flew into Tucson on a straight through flight from L.A. for 79 bucks. Stake horses and rail birds alike could make it there cheap.

Dick Lane, Does He Still Play?

I spent the summer in Austin in 1977, after my father died, and played Dick several games of straight pool every day. He tried to run a hundred every day, and usually did that. We played for 5 bucks a game and needless to say, Dick could easily pay for lunch out of his winnings. More runs than...

Playing Off the Rail....real vs fiction

Absolutely some of the best writing I've ever read, pool book or not. I've read it twice and will probably read it again in a couple of years.

What The BCA needs to do for Pool

It's easy to understand all the frustration out there, but unless this industry becomes united under one goal of making pool more popular I don't believe it well ever happen. As far as the BCA being fragmented, why wouldn't all members want to see pool more popular? The growth of pool helps...
