You can see the square made from 4 sides splicing. First cue has 20 splicing (veneers). Second cue 12 splicing (veneers). The primary ebony splice run deep to the centre.

Technically you are right. But most splice are overlapped. Think about this, would a one splice be heavier than a 8 splices ebony of the same length? Secondly,since most hand-spliced snooker cues are hand planed, it is a lot easier for snooker cue maker to square up evenly a four splices...

The primary purpose for the ebony splicing is to make the cue heavier. More splicing, more heavier (depending on the length).
