A couple of photos from the Dallas pool scene in the 1960s

Well, I know that Vernon was sure it was Danny Matthews when he gave the photo to Mike Haines yesterday. That "Bald Eagle" nicknames sounds right, but I'm not sure. Danny was a pretty smart gambler, but Titanic busted him one night on a dice proposition. (How many rolls of a single die to roll...

I don't recall your match with Mike Ferguson, but I do remember than you and Vernon weren't that friendly. And for sure, Charlie was far more dangerous. And R.D. Matthews more dangerous yet. I may not be remembering this right, but didn't Vernon get physical with you once? Rubbed your face in a...

Vernon Litton for the muscle guy and Danny Matthews with the hat. Coincidentally, Titanic Thompson, then in his 70s, was around Cotton Bowling Palace for a few years at the same time that Vernon and Danny were there. Roughly the 1963-1966 time period. Cotton Palace lost its billiard license in...

A couple of photos from the Dallas pool scene in the 1960s

Jay, your memory never ceases to amaze! The guy with the hat is Danny Matthews, a local bookie and pretty fair pool player. One night I started betting Danny on a proposition that involved me throwing a cue ball three rails to knock in a ball. He got me $90 stuck, in 1963 money, but five hours...

Hey, Dick...I knew that if you saw this thread you'd recognize Vernon right away. You probably remember Danny Matthews, though you may not have recognized him in this photo. I'll have to check out the thread you mentioned. For the guys here on AZ, the main thing to know about Vernon back in the...

The guy in the picture did some body guard work from time to time. He also collected money for a few high rolling gamblers.

Yeah, for me, a "tush hog" is a rough customer who is prone to physical violence and who isn't going to lose any sleep over hurting someone.

Are you thinking of Billy Incardona? Good guess, but incorrect. The initials are V.L.

Bobby MIGHT be the guy writing the book, but he is not the muscular guy in the pics. Bobby would have been about 3-4 years old when these pics were taken.

A couple of photos from the Dallas pool scene in the 1960s

A guy I was helping with a book about his life as a pool hustler asked my opinion about using a particular person's real name in the book. As we discussed this issue, I recalled having seen a couple of photos of the person in question when I had visited them a few years back in Dallas. The...

    A real creep

Lenny, Thanks for your detailed post, it really has the "ring of truth" and I can very easily see it going down exactly the way you described. I'm about Grady's age and can appreciate, at least a little, how he might have felt in that situation, but Grady has been through more problems than I...

Try putting this post in the Ask the Cuemaker forum. I think that would be a much better spot for it.

Step by Step, with photos, easy and safe shaft cleaning

Chris, one thing I've noticed about about shafts that have just been waxed is that they can be so slick that the friction coefficient is actually greater than it would be with just burnished wood. In other words, even though on a cellular level the surface may be smoother with wax, the shaft...

    Shaft cleaning questions

I don't use Butcher's all the time, but I keep a can handy. I got the tip from Fatboy when I noticed a can of Butcher's sitting near a couple of big safes that held a zillion dollars worth of high end custom cues. He said that Barry Szamboti used it and recommended it to him. That was more than...

A 1998 Dale Perry - pretty elaborate, but what's the value?

You are correct in saying that the joint can lock up and be difficult to separate if dirt or grit gets into it. I have never had that happen, but have heard of it happening to others. Using joint protectors should be a must with this joint. By the way, Billy Stroud, a pretty good cue maker...

A 1998 Dale Perry - pretty elaborate, but what's the value?

I agree. I'm not sure why some are biased against the Uni-Loc joint. There have been some very high end cues using this joint and I have played with many cues using it. I hit some balls with this Dale Perry and it plays rock solid.

A 1998 Dale Perry - pretty elaborate, but what's the value?

A 1998 Dale Perry -- what's the value? We all know the truism that a cue is worth what someone is willing to pay, no more and no less. And most of us know what happened to the value of Dale Perry cues over the past few years. An old friend of mine recently bought a Dale Perry cue without any...
