Are the best pool players also the most intelligent?

OK, maybe athletic ability was the wrong term. Guys like Phil Mickelson and Tom Watson have the god-given ability to hit a golf ball - a combination of athleticism, hand eye coordination, motor control etc.

Are the best pool players also the most intelligent?

So who are the players that have become great in a few years? One thing that all of the top player have in common is many hours of practice over a number of years.

Are the best pool players also the most intelligent?

Athletic ability is a bigger factor in golf than pool. Rather than a single ball and a single hole, the game of pool has infinite possibilities on every shot. Pool is probably the sport that is most analogous to chess, which of course requires a lot of mental ability.

Are the best pool players also the most intelligent?

Do you say you are flattering yourself because you are intelligent and a good player? Seems like pool takes more intelligence than other single player sports like bowling, darts, golf, etc. The process of visualizing a runout or contemplating options at the table requires some intelligence.

    Back Hand English

When I apply Left or Right English I shift the entire cue to the left/right or what you might call parallel english. I shoot with an OB2 shaft, so CB squirt is kept to a minimum anyway. Would I see a benefit by learning back hand english? And what is the best training method to learn back...

any custom cues out there for under $100?

Roger Long will build a custom cue for $180 or $130 if you provide the shaft. That's probably as close as you will get to $100. http://customcues.maestrosproshop.com/ I can't comment from experience, but mine is on order and he has been great to deal with so far.

    Bert Kinister work outs?

Agreed. From the videos, I can tell he is a brilliant instructor, and I wouldn't hesitate to take a lesson from him if given the opportunity. As far as the videos go, your money may be better spent elsewhere.

    Bert Kinister work outs?

I've got 3 of Kinister's videos. He seems to be a great instructor but the videos are poorly done. The videos I have are pretty much just taped practice sessions with one of his students. Nothing like the Dr Dave or the new Mika Immonen videos

    Stroke Speed Drill

I try to avoid getting into these positions when possible, and I suppose there is room for improvement here as well. But even the best players will need to land the cue ball at an exact spot from time to time.

    Stroke Speed Drill

On the shots that I am referring to, a high degree of precision is required....Playing area shape just won't do. Leaving the cue ball an inch short or an inch long of the desired target increases the difficulty of completing the runout exponentially. This situation seems to come up at least...

    Stroke Speed Drill

    Stroke Speed Drill

It seems that one of my biggest weaknesses is controlling the speed of the cue ball. When playing position for the next shot, I've got decent control over the path of the cue ball. But when pin-point position is required, I'll often over or under shoot where I intend the cue ball to stop...

Cue Builders: WTB 31" Butt with 5/16X18 Joint

I am looking to get a butt made with a 5/16X18 joint (I already own a 30" OB2 shaft). It needs to be 31" with an irish linen wrap, aside from this it doesn't need to be fancy, just so it looks decent and is functional. I'd like to target right around 20 ounces on the complete cue.

    vintage pool images

I'd like to decorate the walls of my pool room with vintage pool posters in black and white. I already have the paul newman poster from the hustler. I am not interesed in the more commonly available posters on the internet. I'd like something unique, like maybe an image of some of the past...

    Aim

Thanks for the response. I've looked through many of the aiming threads, but I haven't found much applicable to my question. I am not looking for a system on how to choose the point of aim. Rather, once you've determined the aim point how do you deliver the cueball to that point. I believe I...

    Aim

What's a good way to visualize the point of aim on the object ball? For some reason I can't pinpoint a spot or vertical line on the OB. I've tried the ghost ball method as well, but I just can't "see" it. I've been playing pool off and on for the last 15 years but only recently have started...

    Flexibility

Agreed. Pool is far from being the motivating factor in improving my health. I see a slight improvement to my game as being a side benefit.

    Flexibility

I'll try this while practicing today. Although the long reach is nice, sometimes I wish I could play like I was a foot shorter.
