I actually believe that you can put more stroke(spin, whatevr u wanna call it) on a ball with a firmer tip. In my experiences with tips, the soft ones always seem to squish down when you gotta power stroke it and end up with a miscue. A firmer tip, I've always felt more confidence in my stroke...
