Apart from tradition, do you feel that the shot off the point of the side pocket to the farther corner on that side should count as a bank? I think everyone agrees that off the point to a pocket on the other side of the table is good.
That depends on the field. For a WNT event, maybe 18. If it were implemented, the speed on a bunch of break shots should be observed.
In some competitions, the three point rule is relaxed by using a lower line.
The placement of the cue ball is an issue. It might be an inch or two farther. That can give a 4% variation in measured speed if a single distance is used. Not a huge problem, and most players will probably not be that close to the limit.
To minimize body movement, lock the back knee and keep that leg straight -- that anchors the bottom of the body -- and lock the bridge arm -- that anchors the upper body.
Playing off the point to slide down the side rail is a standard advanced shot. I think there's a video of Efren getting a hit that way and maybe making the ball. From the spot, shoot at the near side point and adjust the "fullness" until you get the right action. The cue ball has to be rolling...
An extreme case is where you play a long bank near a side rail and the object ball nicks the point of the side rail before the side pocket, and then by a small miracle goes into the corner. The rule quoted above does not allow that as an incidental rail on a technicality -- that's a different...
It's tough for everyone. I've described a good way to practice that shot in my articles in Billiards Digest. You might find the article here: http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/BD_articles.html
A minor correction: Joshua Filler ran 285 in the final Derby City 14.1 event. It was a solo high run attempt without an opponent or points limit. The pockets were the standard Diamond pro pockets of 4.5 inches. That is the high run record for that event.
In the past, the BCA offered either no travel expenses to the North American representatives or just a thousand or so. Few players were willing to spend thousands and a week and a half of their time to play in distant events where they likely would not get to the final 16. As a result, the BCA...
Dr. Dave has videos on this.
If the balls are a quarter-inch apart, a player who has practiced the shot can draw the cue ball straight back some with a level stroke shooting straight at the ball. There are multiple techniques to avoid the double hit.
If the balls are an inch apart, it's not...
... can only happen if the viewers are measured in the hundreds of thousands or more. The traditional US regional event has no chance to get those viewers. No viewers, no sponsorship money.
Or he could do the progressive ghost. Race the 5-ball ghost to 11 and add a ball if you win and remove a ball if you lose. I think 5 is going to be tough, based on previous reports.
Like the restaurant reviews that give one star because the restaurant had closed at closing time, or they didn't even go in for some other flakey reason.
But if I'm checking out some gadget, and four bad reviews all complain about the latch breaking or the handle being made of brittle plastic...
