Easyrider Magazine, Pool Players, and Bikers Article..

I love this story. Thanks for adding more detail since you posted it, in part, in this thread: Playing with a Broomstick

    8-ball one pocket

Maybe I should change my name here to: That-Guy-Who-Makes-Up-All-Those-Stupid-Games. Anyway, as if one pocket isn't already hard enough, sometimes, when boredom sets in, I play a variation of one pocket, where the usual rules apply, except, after you call your pocket and break, your opponent...

Making 14.1 Harder To Make High Runs

I think I'm harder on myself for missing shape than I am for missing a ball. When I get really serious about playing, one of the exercises I use is to throw three balls on the table at random. Get ball in hand, and call each of the balls before I shoot the first one. If I miss a ball, I have to...

Making 14.1 Harder To Make High Runs

This confuses me a little. I kind of thought it's what everyone already does. I don't call anything out loud, but in my head I know what and where I'm going to shoot next...in fact, I do so for several balls ahead. Things don't always go the way I planned to work the pattern, but I try, and then...

    Tom "Dr.Cue" Rossman

Tom and Marty are wonderful people! They're fun house guests. One year, we took them rock climbing, and somewhere I have a great photo of them running around like kids, under a waterfall. For a while, I think they had one of the photos from that trip--of them hanging off a rock--displayed in...

How much does your cue weigh?

I think the poor OP was just trying to use the limits of polls here to match his best guess about the statistical distribution of cue weights. So far it seems like a pretty good fit.... *grin*

How much does your cue weigh?

More than once in the various forums there's been a reference to a study that said, on average, pros play with 19.5 ounces...but that's old data, and the game has changed. Even if your cue started out as 19.5, switching to a LD shaft could easily drop it to 19.

    How Do the Pros Aim

First, I think it's great that you share the wealth of information in your articles online. I refer to them lots. I like the simplified, and user-friendly analysis you've made in this article. My own analysis, done years ago, was a little more complicated. I looked at the basic trigonometry of...

    How Do the Pros Aim

No matter what aiming system people use, they all still play by feel. No aiming system can completely take in to account all the variables for making most shots. Aiming systems cut down on learning time compared to just shooting a lot of pool (heuristic learning). The most important thing...

At what point does practice become counterproductive?

In another thread, someone said they thought Shane practices 12 hours a day...it could be too much. He might do just as well with less. In most activities you need consolidation time...and too much practice can lead to staleness. In your practice sessions do you notice a plateau, or--even...

    How Do the Pros Aim

Aiming is the easy part. Hitting where you aim is the hard part.

    aftermarket shafts.

Maybe your opinion is better than a pro's--as has been said here lots--pros can shoot with anything. Regular players are more sensitive to changes, and adjustments. Everything you said was interesting.

    9-ball, 8-ball, 14.1, or 1p?

I've been reading Kevin Cook's biography of legendary gambler Titanic Thompson and came across these: And I really got a kick out of the pool movie Turn the River, when Famke Janssen's character "Kailey" tells the guy she is gambling with that switching from one-pocket to 9-ball would be...

    More important: Head or heart?

I mentioned in a thread a couple of months ago that a friend raised up from a shot and said something like: "My head says this won't go, but my heart says it will". He made the shot. How often have you had a shot lined up, thought it was wrong, then made an adjustment and missed?

    Searching for billiard equipment woes

You shouldn't have a problem, except at higher levels of league play and breaking. Even then, given your beliefs, it would probably be wise for a tournament director to allow a synthetic tip. Other AZB folks directly involved in tournaments could probably give you better counsel on this than I...
