Your pool cue thoughts before I make my Purchase

I bought a Dale Perry and was suprised at the quality $100 can buy in todays cue market. The two things thing I did not like was the tip and the shaft taper ... to stiff for me. Easily sanded down to something a bit more flexible and tip is replaceable. Finish was almost flawless, joint fit was...

    Three cues to compair ...

Has anyone any experience with any of the following cues ... I know they are low end economy cues and will not have the refinements of a more expensive custom cue ... J&J KAISER Dale Perry (ebay special with level IV shaft) McDermott Star All three are in the $100 to $125 price range. All...

    Resonant frequency ...

Chris, it was just one of those crazy thought that pass thru my brain every now and then. Thinking about it ... it would be a hard thing to do because of the different densities of the shaft and butt. A solid one piece cue would solve most all that by having only one resonate frequency to...

    Installing Full Threaded Pins

Joey ... that would make the cue true and straight only with that shaft and only until the joint wore down some ... wouldn't it also make it hard to fit a second shaft to the butt since the final pass would only mask any joint problems? Why would you need a final pass like that if the joint...

    Installing Full Threaded Pins

When the pin is true and straight in the butt, making a shaft for the that butt is straight forward ... and I see your point ... if I feel a tap can not thread a true hole then how can I tap the shaft and have it come out straight. I guess because I always taped the shaft while it was oversized...

    Installing Full Threaded Pins

Mike, the pin is fully threaded ... the hole is not ... that is what I was saying. A snug fit and good epoxy was my preferred method of installing 3/8 x 10 threaded pins. I felt it was almost impossible to thread a hole, using a tap, perfectly concentric and true.

    Resonant frequency ...

Has any cue maker thought about the resonant frequency of the butt vers the shaft? If the two are close would that cue offer a better "hit" because of that? When the cue tip strikes the cue ball it sets up a wave traveling down the shaft toward the joint. If the resonant frequency of both the...

    Installing Full Threaded Pins

No ... not threaded. I would apply epoxy in the hole and on the pin, press it down into the hole, and rotate the pin to work the epoxy up thru the threads till it bottomed out then back it off 1/4 turn. I dont know where to get a pilot tap ... I thought atlas supply had them. Willee

    A message from OB Cues

As always the proof is in the pudding ... if OB continues to produce a product that is high quality then the process is irrelevant. OB Cues has in the past ... made a very high quality product and treated their customers right ... I am confident the quality of their future products will be...

    Installing Full Threaded Pins

What I did with a full threaded 3/8 x 10 pin was to bore the hole for a very snug fit. This kept the pin as true as the bore hole. Good epoxy and very failures ... easy to remove if ever needed. For the shaft I would use a pilot style tap then a bottoming tap. Willee

    Why do older cues

Pool Cues are no different than any other product in the marketplace. If it isnt what the buyers want then it dont sell. Look at all the big production cue makers now selling an "Import" line with their name stamped on them. Why? ... cost ... the under $200 market is a HUGE one. I agree with...

    Decision on tips please....

I agree ... tips like most other things with a pool cue ... are a matter of personal preference. Its tough to spend the money and go thru tips to find what you prefer but I do not know of any short cut. When you do find one ... buy a few extra tips from that same batch and stick with them. Broke my schon :(

I repaired a Shon for a friend a few years ago ... broken much like yours. Remade a complete new forearm, Inlays, points, and all ... it looked better than new. For $400 with all the inlay work if they are replacing the forearm, you are getting a deal. However, I would think selling you a new...

    What is this material?

I once cut up an old cue ball and used if for ferrel material. After about 3 months it looked that same color but I see grain in yours so that isnt it.

Effect on Cue Butt with Delrin Collets

Blue painters tape is what I also recommend. Wrap two layers where the collets will be and cut the tape so it don't overlap. Willee

    Best lathe for tips

Ya get what you pay for. The best tip machine made IMHO is the Unique Cue Companion. It also will do shaft cleaning, light joint work, and butt repair once you build your skill using it. Willee

    Cue Companion

Got to agree here ... there is no money left for a cuemaker. The lathe is just the down payment for all the other equipment you will need to buy. If it isnt just a hobby for you better reconsider. How do you plan to finish your cues? A spray booth is just one of the other "things" you will...
