Joey, I had a Grizzly belt drive lathe and it was smooth as silk when you use the right belts. However a quality gear lathe should not vibrate to the point of messing up the work.

No Problem ... I set the steps on my smaller machine by measuring 6 inches of travel with a dial indicator and then tweeking the steps until it actually moves 6 inches. I would use a larger movement but a 6" dial indicator is the largest I have. Somewhat a slow process but it dials the machine...

Well that fine cue you have in your avatar photo would look even better with some nice inlay-ed diamonds at the base of the points. That is what you would do with it.

For a lot less you can get a 4 axis cnc machine on eBay. It will do everything you have said you want to do. I bought a three axis machine for doing pens and small inlays in cues and it works just fine.

Ted Harris posted a Cue Companion for sale on this forum ... great machine for what you want to do.

I build Willeecue's ... I dont try to imitate every other cue maker out there. I stick to what I like and prefer and avoid making shafts with tapers other than my own. If you like my taper that is great ... if you do not then you need to buy a custom shaft from someone like OB or another cue...

I can believe there is a long running argument over which tapering machine has the most advantages. If you dont know CNC programing then there is no contest. If you use a fixed taper on your shafts and never change it then it is still no contest. If however you are willing and capable of...

Joey, Having a CNC machine to do shaft tapering is the way to go. You can do any custom taper you can program it to do. You can re-taper shafts to smaller diameter tips holding the same profile. Then add in all the other things a CNC can do and it just dont make sense to use something else ...

Ditto ... the DC motor powered lead screw power feed is the better way to go. Chris Hightower is constantly looking for ways to improve his lathes and doing a great job of it.

There is no difference between the two other than the side rail length and ball screw rod. So exchanging then and paying the difference would save a lot on shipping. Willee
