World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

Let's not get too crazy here. Yes, Matchroom has flopped on its streaming platform for the WPC and we are all upset, as well we should be. As they have built the best pool tour of the 21st century, we are not used to having Matchroom and flop in the same sentence. I will stay patient here...

Stream matches suddenly have a "Monty Python's Flying Circus" feel to them. Commentators keep talking about the elevated pressure that comes with playing on the stream table, yet the stands are near empty, so the matches almost qualify as being played in private. There's more pressure playing...

Actually, both the draw and live scoring are available for free. Go to Matchroompool.com and, on the menu, select "live scoring" to sign up. Matchroom's live scoring platform is, in my opinion, excellent.

Looks like no Table 2 or 3 again today. Given the choice between a) watching Chua vs dead money with Yates commentating and b) going back to sleep, I'm going back to sleep.

Do they even like pool in Jeddah? Shaw's TV table match appeared to have a live audience of less than ten. Whether I am in attendance or not at a pool event, poor live fanfare drops the quality of any event in my eyes. I think we owe the Saudis our gratitude for bringing money into our sport...

Yates, who is better than he used to be, was just awful in that match. Besides his butchery of the defending champ's name time and again, he attempted to compare Fedor to golfing great Scottie Scheffler in a comparison that just plain didn't work. For those that do not follow golf, Scheffler...

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

Very true, although the break used in WNT play is pretty tough, as the final position of the cue ball is very hard to predict.

    Terry Bell Passing

Wow, sad to hear. While I knew Larry Hubbart, I met Terry for the very first time about seven months ago at the BCA Hall of Fame dinner when Jeanette Lee introduced us. We had a nice chat. No organization has done more to make pool fun in America than the APA. Condolences to his family and...

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

Best post on this subject. It was much harder to learn back in the day and many, like you, had to learn the "expensive" way.

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

On board with this to a point. I reckon that guys like Hall, Rempe, Appleton and Souquet had a cue ball that was comparable to today's best. Still, the general standard in pattern play has definitely risen quite a bit since the days of old.

Everyone had the break figured out at the Derby. Unfortunately, Diamond did not use the narrow break box that is customary in WNT ranking events. Most everybody agreed that the significantly wider break box made things a little too easy for the world's most elite players.

Yeah, that's a very good win for Oscar. Stefan, whom I watched at the Las Vegas Open 10-ball event in February, is a very straight shooter.

World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

Agreed that this was shocking. Perhaps this will be resolved tomorrow. Worse, what we've gotten on Table 1 is two matches that were forgone conclusions before they began in Gorst vs Henderson and Shaw vs Al-Ohtaibi. There were some very good matches today, but American fans did not get to see...

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

Well, I've been around pro pool for 50 years, so I've watched them all. I strongly disagree. They did not shoot as straight back then and, with a few exceptions, their fundamentals were not on a par with those of today's top cueists. Agreed that it's not all about talent, but superior...

World Pool Championships 2025, July 21-26, Jeddah

Not that shocking. While Shane looked solid with 4th at the Derby City 9ball in January, he came 17th in the European Open and skipped the UK Open. My guess is that he will still qualify, but he's now exposed to drawing one of the favorites in the round of 64. He needs to find his form in the...

St. Louis Louie vs. Archer 1990

This is certainly a thoughtful and well-presented post, but I'd suggest that the level of play was raised more from 2015-25 than from 1980-2015, and advances in equipment has almost nothing to do with it. The cues and tables were just as good ten years ago as today. As you've rightly pointed...

Any videos of Dr Dave in an actual match?

Thanks for sharing. As you have hinted, the results attained by an instructor's students are, arguably, the most important hint you need when selecting an instructor for yourself.
