BCA Hall of Fame - Class of 2022

Your comment exemplifies exactly the point of my earlier comment. If they do nothing but nominate the first name that comes to mind nothing but contemporaries then someone from 50 years ago was just pushed into the shadows and forgotten.

Jerry, yes, absolutely. Dennis Orcullo, too soon. There is a rich history of players still to be recognized.

How important is the cue for beginner-novice level?

You need a good quality cue I don't think that's hardly debatable. My first two piece cue was the Brunswick Willie hoppe. As much as I liked it it was literally a club. My second cue was a Paradise. I was almost instantly a better player with the Paradise cue.

The never ending quest for the perfect cue (long, boring rant).

I haven't really read any of the comments because I just basically wanted to make a comment. When I was younger I was like a nut I got cues from anybody and everybody from Ginacue to Szambodi and everybody in between plus most all of the production cues. I was always kind of jealous of people...

    Warning about Benny's Cues

I have seen cues like that. It's amazing, unless they get damaged it is really hard to tell.

Learned a one pocket lesson yesterday.

I remembering when guys would play safe and games took 40 minutes nobody ever shot anything or ever took a risk. In no time half the balls are up table, it was horrible. It seems today the players are far more aggressive and it's a style of play that I honestly prefer. It makes for a much...

Learned a one pocket lesson yesterday.

One pocket is risk and reward. Players will shoot at a shot that will win the game for them. They are not risking the game to get one ball. I remember a top player commenting after losing an important match that he played too safe on a shot. He forced a desperate shot and the player made it and...

Just got kicked out from tourney

Worst experience with a tournament director was in actually a pretty big tournament playing races to 11. The tournament director also played in the tournament and I happened to be playing him one match. During our play he was still involved in running the tournament at one point leaving the...

    George Balabushka, any guess?

That sounds about right. Gus made me a cue in 1977 for $320. Very fancy there's a mention of it in the billiard encyclopedia.

If you're a stranger you usually get the worst of it as far as handicap. I've played in some of those tournaments they basically would handicapped me to the point is like no way I could win but it's fun to play anyway. Sometimes you outrun the nuts.

How was the draw being fixed? This tournament you refer to, what were you racing to?

The B.C. Open 9-ball Championship & BCA Open 9-ball championship

Wasn't there also a golf tournament of the same name that coincided with the pool tournament?

The B.C. Open 9-ball Championship & BCA Open 9-ball championship

29 years this month. I came in the pool room and someone said he died. We would play billiards and he would cough continuously. He was horribly overweight, I can remember when he was slim and as handsome as Tony Curtis. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/57250174/gary-pinkowski

Just got kicked out from tourney

If you read back through his past postings he calls himself at one point a C player. In another posting he's all excited about having just run his first full rack. I think the guy is kind of a nut.

SightRight: Stunned by how good this is

Yea, I just did the math I have known him about 56 years. We have played a lot. It's funny, if you play with a player that has quirks you can pick them up. I used to run around with a guy, a good player. He commented I was beginning to play like Danny. I was stroking and beginning to stand...

I would have barred you long before this. People don't play in little tournament's like that for the money. It is supposed to be fun. Sounds like you get off beating up on weaker players.

    George Balabushka, any guess?

Toby told me used to go to his shop and could get a cue in a short time. People in NY could get cues. NY Tony told me Dean Martin who played pool ordered a cue and Balabushka never made him one. I saw a picture of him playing and he had a Martin cue. I guess California players like Dean Martin...

Dumbest thing you’ve done in a match?

I was playing in a tournament and my opponent shooting a hard draw shot knocked the object ball off the table. The referee picked up the ball and put it on the spot. I like an idiot walked over and picked up the cue ball. The referee said I'm sorry that's not a foul, but my opponent who...

    George Balabushka, any guess?

I don't know about that as far as the number of cues. I knew guys from New York who said he would come into the pool room with a cue wrapped up in paper and before he left it would be sold. I think he made a lot more cues than that. Probably no real record of how many cues he actually made and...

    George Balabushka, any guess?

I ordered one about 1970 it was $120. with two shafts a simple four-point style. I sent him the money in full. I spoke to him on the phone maybe three or four times over a two year period and never got the cue. At one point I got angry and said just forget about it send me my money back. I got...
