I remember some discussion of safety play in Ray Martin's book. 99 Critical shots in pool. I think there is some discussion of safety play in Phil Capelle's Play your best straight pool. Other than that, I'd suggest playing around with a minimally open rack and noting how the other balls react...

Dean: I took a lesson with Dallas West a few years ago. He made me stand up and try to shoot like you are talking about. During the lessons I made some shots better, but I can't say that I tried to incorporate it into my game. Maybe I should have.

Racking time is not omitted. I hit pause during the break, and I did not hit resume quick enough. The discrepancy in time was due to operator error.
