"At Thurstons" by J.B. Priestly (For anyone who enjoys a good read)

Treasure Trove I agree, a fantastic site. I love looking through of those old billiard magazines. It makes you realize that some things never change. I think I saw articles about whether the 'modern' (and this was well over 100 years ago) players were as well as the old timers, and on how...

    Help on saftey......

I also think this is a good exercise and one that I find really enjoyable. You need to control both the cue ball and the object ball, but it is surprisingly easy to do once you have practiced it a bit. I like to make make half-ball hits where possible, since it helps when having to judge the...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

almost convinced! Well Patrick, I must say that I find your arguments very persuasive. However there is still some niggling doubt in my mind which I cannot quite pin down at the moment. Perhaps something to do with how the tip is gripping / distorting / sliding ... probably nonsense, but I...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

contact time I am not convinced. On contact, the tip compresses and does stay in contact for a discernable length of time. The high speed videos show this. For as long as there is contact, the tip can exert a force on the c.b. and increase its rotational speed. Put another way, it takes...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Increasing tip contact time Scary! I had been wondering the other day whether there was any high speed video showing this phenomenon (or lack of it). I am with Bigkahuna 100% on this one. My experience has brought me to the conclusion that the underlying physical basis of a good quality hit...

Why would it be easier to draw with one cue over the other?

Stroke more important than the cue Someone who is struggling with the draw shot because they haven't developed a good stroke might find that it helps to use a heavier cue, at least initially. But IMO this is just papering over the cracks - best to work on the stroke.

    Tips make the difference no?

I like my Elks short and battered. For decades I used Elks (or Blue Diamonds), and I never liked them 'tall'. When I changed a tip, I would spend 10 minutes or so hammering away on the tip with an empty beer bottle and fine sanding it every now and again. This was in order to get rid of some...

    Tip Question

Too much I would take the comment that smaller tip = more spin with a grain of salt- which commentator said this by the way? For example, in general pool players spin the ball more than snooker players, but typically use 12.75mm compared with the 9/10mm used in snooker. If smaller tips gave...

question about pausing, i've read the other threads

pause for composure I have always had a long 'Fisher' pause. But my eyes do not switch to the o.b. in that time - they have already moved there during my final backswing. What the pause does for me is settles the mind down somehow, allowing total focus during the delivery. Then I miss.

    Stun

more please! Quite. And also there may be a number of guys out there who have been playing some time but still might be interested in some of the finer points that a thread like this can generate - eg how (and why) to play the stun run-through, or whether to change the grip when playing a...

How do you get over that ONE shot?

making sure the stroke is good Good advice, especially when you haven't found your stroke or when playing a real pressure shot. Not sure that I would want to focus on this all the time though. It is fine if you can do it and still concentrate on getting the balls do what you want. But for me...

Focus on what you want to do, not how to do it I think that there is a lot in this.

How do you get over that ONE shot?

Unrealistic expectations? Perhaps a lot of this derives from the expectations that you have going into the match. Your game has gone up a level and you have been playing very well in practice; you naturally look forward to bringing this new standard into your matchplay. And you expect it to...

    Natural ability VS. Trained ability

Talent, training or practice Talent for pool, like talent for anything else, is not distributed evenly amongst the population, and all the top players (not just Efren) have been given more than their fair share. However clearly talent is not the whole story. At some time in their pool playing...

    Hiding your speed

Adopt the morality you can afford I'll buy this. What it comes down to is that hiding your speed etc, is like any other other form of obtaining money by deception (better known as fraud): that is, something you might do if times are hard and you don't have any honest way of making money. Not...

Nuts & stuff I think that you are looking at two different things here. First is the jumping up on the shot problem. Of course the key to this is keeping your head still, and I can't improve on the excellent nut-string solution already offered. Second (and largely unrelated) is hitting...
