brunswick,just polished up some,had the ribbon shaped label with willie mosconi.they had several labels on them like you are describing.you can probally find several of these on ebay under vintage cues.

if the cue is cored with a good hardwood,the outer wood is more just decor.quality of shaft wood,joint design and ferrule tip,along with the taper will create a different hit

i treaded some cues together like this a few years ago.after they were complete ,i got funny sounds from them.they were threaded about 5 in. and glued with gorilla glue.i feel that there was probally voids where the glue was pushed out by the theading.i went back to the old way...
i cored some once and cut it down pretty close to final size,in about 3 or 4 in. pieces.then dropped it in some latex poly for about two weeks.got it out, and let it dry,machined and worked nicely.
