Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

"When the teacher is ready, the student maybe still isn't?"

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

That saying, "When the student is ready, the teacher appears" always intrigued me. I used to wonder whether it was meant to be a spiritualistic 'the universe will ensure it' idea, or a cue to the teacher to lay low until the right time (although how would they know?) I think you can add the...

Cue sports got some press in UK.👍

"taking into account the shape of the table will give you significant advantage." I feel that the math(s) professor is being somehow abused here.

Table conundrum... For Real King Cobra maybe?

You could try shooting it softer. Does that increase the rail-induced spin? And ensure the cut angle (and cue ball english) contribute to the OB spin too.

Joy Pool recruiting players for streaming matches

I suppose that's why they're willing to pay for the publicity.

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

Although there's an interesting avenue there: How much people are willing to take instruction, or insist on going their own way. I like to understand things in some depth, which has advantages and disadvantages, as it sometimes conflicts a bit with just doing what you're told by an instructor...

    Long sets poll...............

You could go further, to something closer to tennis. A rack could be equivalent to a point in tennis, and the breaks could be grouped like a 'service game'. So you have to beat someone 3 out of 5 while he breaks every rack, to 'break serve' ('break break'?). Then you have multiple games and...

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

In terms of distractions, I think sometimes simply playing much better than normal can be sufficient distraction itself - at least until you get used to how to handle it. This is also an area where a little bit of sports psychology knowledge can be harmful, if you realize you're playing well...

Pool is better off financially than most other sports

It's a good point. I suppose because the big pro sports are so visible, it's natural to compare pool to them. But they should perhaps be considered the exception.

    Advantage after the break

I guess the only situation where a worse player might have an advantage would be in special cases where the player who is better overall, tends to hurt himself by doing something stupid. So a better player who tried to run every table might leave himself with one or two balls from his group...

Moving, don’t know if I should take my table.

If you glued two corners, and can figure out which, presumably you can split at the other two corners this time... I'd say take it with you unless you want a new table badly enough to replace it anyway. But if you're selling the house, you could see if the buyer will give you something for it.

First ever 155 break in snooker to be captured on video!

Eddie Charlton used to hold a record for a break over consecutive racks, 250-something points, I think. After clearing the table in one frame, he broke the next, in the way you described, made a red, and ran out the table again. I don't know whether his record still stands, I kind of hope it does :)

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

Thank you, that's really insightful. I've done similar myself, in figuring out what works for me. But I was focused on my personal performance and my own common denominators, and hadn't thought about the process I used to find what worked for me. Clearly that's a big deal, abstracting the...

First ever 155 break in snooker to be captured on video!

The rules say that if you're hooked on the all reds after a foul, you can pick another ball and pretend it's red.

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

I remember reading, I think in a George Fels book, what seemed like a late addition to the text along the lines of "recently I've been focusing on bringing the cue back in an exactly straight line, with excellent results. If you bring the cue straight back, what else can it do but go straight...

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

I think this is such an interesting point. I have experienced exactly this myself, where I've finished a book, felt good about it, but not done anything differently. On the other hand, both Ratta and Bob's descriptions of what they do differently are slightly intangible (staying in the moment...

Do you have a "learning style"? Maybe not

Is this guidance on teaching the mental game to others? Sounds interesting. My working assumption has always been that you're likely to do more harm than good, if you don't know what you're doing.

Tip - what Flavor is everybody using these days

I think $35 could be viable if there was a big difference in quality, and you knew your tip would be a good one (i.e., no variability between differnent tips of the same type). Given what people spend on cues, $35 for a 'good' tip instead of a bad one would be cheap. But in reality, I don't...
