Amazing! A schedule that doesn't kill the players or the staff or the audience. Two rounds Saturday afternoon and two rounds Saturday night. 1PM Eastern: 2:30 PM (or so) Eastern:

For the Matchroom events, additional stats are kept, but I think it's only for the featured table and I suspect the data goes away. It requires something like Accu-Stats which tracked many performance metrics. Few people were interested in the info at the time, so it went away. It was a lot of...

Shot Clock - What's the point?

The problem is that there is not even one official at the table for the 256-player events. There are area referees that have to cover several tables. At the European Open, it was typically four tables. They came when called over and racked the balls.

Shot Clock - What's the point?

You can have timekeepers on each table, as mentioned above for the first Atlantic City US Open, or you can use chess clocks. You could probably also do it with a camera and the right software -- where are the balls, when do they stop moving, when do they start moving again?

    Men's 2025 World 8-Ball Championship, Bali, Oct.7-13

Just got this announcement. It is at the same time as the Hanoi Open. Solid pool in that part of the world in October, starting with the Peri Open and ending with the Philippines Open.

    Pronunciation of "Aloysius" (Yapp)

That's how I had always heard it pronounced, but it's not how Yapp pronounces it. Listen to how it's pronounced 18 seconds into this hometown interview.

    Fractional Aiming/Cue Ball

Yes. If you stick "arcsin(1/2) in degrees" into google search, it will tell you that a half-ball hit is 30 degrees. For "arcsin(1/4) in degrees" you get 14.5 degrees (about 15) for a 1/4 cut or a 3/4 full hit. For those who prefer to think in fullness rather than amount of cut, you can instead...

Shot Clock - What's the point?

I may have been remembering the first US Open in Atlantic City. At least one of the Matchroom events did have timers and I think the scorekeepers did the timing.

Rule 6.6 does not specify "in play". The whole situation needs to be clarified.

Shot Clock - What's the point?

The first Matchroom US Open did have timekeeping on every table. I think the person was also the score keeper. It was a huge logistics nightmare. There were lots of no-shows.

Can someone help me with the value of a Brunswick please?

My main home pool room for a bunch of years had a mix of GC3s and Medalists. It was hard to tell much difference between them in play. They were all about 1995 vintage. The cushions may need replacing. I would say $1000 max. He could ask $1500 if he is not in a hurry.

WAXGATE and the Effects of Slick Cloth and Waxed Balls

The cue ball is not being cleaned, it is being adulterated. The players have a right to know before they go to a tournament what kind of conditions they will be playing under. It is easier for everyone to agree that the balls will be clean, smooth, cast phenolic without any slippery substance...

The OP seems to have been referring to the "island" problem of a group of players who are inbred, play-wise. They are sort of a bubble. Cavitation is the formation of bubbles in liquid, such as when propellers on boats move too fast. (Bad for the propeller.)

    Pronunciation of "Aloysius" (Yapp)

Yeah, I had a boss whose middle name was AL-oh-WISH-us. He preferred to not be called by his middle name. :devilish:

That's a problem. Again, it depends on the situation. If there was a bad hit, and the cue ball is rolling up to the far rail and is sure to hit nothing, that's one thing. I have seen a player pick up the cue ball while it was rolling after a foul, and it was rolling towards a cluster.

Florida Open 2025, August 5-10, Orlando, Caribe Royale

So..., it's complicated. Technically, under the WSR (World Standardized Rules) which Matchroom is using (except for break format, I think), intentionally touching any out of play ball while a game is in progress is unsportsmanlike conduct. An unsportsmanlike foul is penalized as the referee (and...

    Pronunciation of "Aloysius" (Yapp)

I think Aloysius says uh-LOY-shus. (Rhymes with bus.) Of course that's not the way a lot of people might say it.

    Fractional Aiming/Cue Ball

No. They go as a different function called arcsin(). It means "the angle whose sine is the given fraction of a radius." The important distance is how far from the center (measured perpendicular to the path of the cue ball), the object ball is struck. So, it the object ball is contacted full...
