    help with threads

Are you using the brass 3/8-10 pin with a flat minor on it? These tend to go in a bit harder. Atlas actually sells a special tap to put the center drilled pins in. The minor is about .308" or 7.8mm. Jim.

CNC machine, recomendations, pics and advice

Please no offense however he will not likely get user friendly. There is software out there that is user friendly however it will not be powerful enough to use for inlays. Bobcad is the most common CAD-CAM software that we use. It is relatively cheap and not too hard to learn. But learn he must...

    CNC Question: Limit Switches

Gary, thanks for posting the question here. Ok to start with I am glad that you understand why you want the Y axis to be zero at the center of your turning spindle or shaft. Now then when you reference an axis you are setting Machine zero. This should not be confused with your work offset...

    CNC Question: Limit Switches

Oh yes, good question. I like others have cut my teeth on Mach 3 Mill software. The mill software is better than the lathe software for instance the screen lay out. I understand the difference between both but prefer to use mill. I use a 3 axes mill for live turning using the forth axis stepper...

    CNC Question: Limit Switches

Ok look for these. Gary the mechanical switches are only good for limit. You will want to wire them in series and use them on your g540 between pins 10 and 12. I think that's correct. You will want to wire them normally closed so that when the switch is activated it breaks this e-stop chain...

    CNC Question: Limit Switches

What optical switches do you have? Ok Gary, what do you have in the way of switches? How are you wiring these switches? You know what a limit switch is as they are wired on your machine. Are your limit switches wired in series or are they individually wired? How many inputs do you have left on...

    Loosing steps in my X.

Dano, I wondered why you had your velocity set so low. 16 threads per inch and 3/4 leads screw explains it. Sounds like you got everything worked out. good luck. Jim.

    Loosing steps in my X.

Dano, I know Royce was talking about cutting faster than that. What is the pitch of your lead screws? Seems like your settings are way too low. If your missing steps at other settings, What where they set at originally? Something is still not set correctly. How long would you expect it to take...

    Loosing steps in my X.

Dano, what do you have acc/dec set too and what is your velocity set at? Setting the acc/dec too low has some interesting side effects. Jim.

Blackcreek cues new cnc inlay machine

Thanks Travis, thought so. Is it the 4" or 5" ver. of the chuck. By the way, I recently picked up two good rotary tables on e-bay. The smaller of the two has a 1" hole. The larger is 1.5". I leaned toward one of those chucks but feared it would be too heavy. If you have any issues with Mach 3 or...

Blackcreek cues new cnc inlay machine

Nice machine. Travis, what can you tell me about that collet chuck you have on your rotary table? Looks to be a 5c chuck. Do you have a hole through the table? thanks, Jim.

    Loosing steps in my X.

Dano, I didn't get the files for some reason however Royce sent them to me. I agree that the G-code program looks good in Mach 3. If you suspect heat as an issue then try putting a fan on the G540 back side. I believe if you wanted there is a fan chiller unit out there for that. Also, could be...

    LF: Uni-Loc insert for shaft

Actually, I have several. I was considering sending you one if no one else spoke up. However, I have found Kj to be very intelligent and helpful. I take offence to this comment even though he doesn't. Good luck in your search! Jim.

    Loosing steps in my X.

Please refer to this thread. Paragraph 3 please! http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=167988 Now then, Dano, if your cam software is causing this issue then you would be able to see it in the tool path display of Mach 3. If you zoom in on your Mach3 tool path taking great care not to...

    Loosing steps in my X.

If steps are getting missed Dano, I would think if X where missing steps then the bottom of your skull would be too large as well. If you decide that X is missing steps, it may not be all mechanical. It could be loosing the steps as the X rapids back to its starting point. To rule this out...

    CNC Questions

Here is an example of the ATC I like. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Precise-Spindle-System-ESC-3043-and-PCS-410-Controller-/140603006363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20bc979d9b#ht_860wt_1392 By hitting the top of the spindle with 85 or so psi, the tool is release out of the collet. It clamps back...

    CNC Questions

I have gone several rounds. Mach 3 is a good choice. I would just stick with stepper motors unless you have ever worked with servos. The bang for the buck is not there. I would use a Gecko 540 system. Oh and I am a fan of the Smooth Stepper. I would choose anti backlash lead screws over ball...

Some more stuff for my low-budget tip lathe

Nice job I think you did a great job. I like that you didn't have to copy another's lathe and still used taig parts. Good job. Jim.
