    New Pool Player Observations.

It sounds like you are enjoying the social aspect of the game. If you really want to get the most out of pool you have to embrace both the social side and the solitude found in practicing. Those that pick just one are missing out. Enjoy the ride.

Nick Varner is a Fargorate 777

By "outrun" I didn't mean they could keep up with the top ranked players in the WORLD. Just that they would perform better than their "average" Fargo Rating over the long term. Possibly like Varner has done. I still think it's probably the case. Of course, not everyone. Just players here and there.

Making an offer on Gold Crown III

Really? I get the deal side of it. I guess I'm just pointing out the value side of most used pool tables. If you play on it daily, paying a few thousand dollars for any pool table seems worth it. Now relative to what someone else paid for it -- maybe not. I just try not to live my life that way...

Making an offer on Gold Crown III

Sure thing. But having seen your table on here, I bet you wouldn't have regretted it had you paid a couple thousand for it. It's all relative to the usage.

    Cue alignment???

With a square snooker type stance, when you approach the ball with your plant foot solidly on the shot line, you have to twist your hips and your shoulders away from the line to be properly aligned. Otherwise, your shoulders will be too square to the ball. This is typical of the players that...

Making an offer on Gold Crown III

Don't second guess your decision. Someone always comes along to tell the pool table purchaser that they paid too much. It's practically pennies we're taking about when it comes to just about any table IF you use it at all. Congrats.

What the pros do differently ...

I think the fresh cloth dictates the shot choice more than the pocket tightness. You can even see the differences during some tournaments as the cloth breaks in. There are a lot of spin shots that just aren't possible on fresh cloth, so players will go with their 2nd choice just to get by. That...

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

Really it could all be as simple as with the increase in money in the game -- the top players are just distancing themselves more from the field than in the past. As the game becomes more and more professional, the part timers just can't keep up as much as in the past and even many of their...

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

Haha. I love Fargo Rate actually. I just think there are minor issues on the periphery that if identified, those of us "in the know" can use to our advantage. Just like your view on one-pocket. I admit there can be very repetitive, ignorant takes on Fargo Rate. I try not to argue those points...

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

Not that I disagree with you entirely, but Fargo Rate includes one-pocket matches. So you are being critical of their system just like the rest of us. 😉

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

Are you including yourself in this list since you questioned Fargo as well?

Shane Van Boening draw stroke: wrist movement analyzed frame-by-frame

You're not wrong. He used to be a more natural elbow dropper on all of his power strokes, sort of like Fedor. Once he put that extension on he started locking his elbow more. He really ends his follow through abruptly now on many power shots. It looks "snatchy" to me, if that's even a word.

Welcome to Gestapo Billiards. Have a good time.

At least the owner is up front. Probably doesn't need the money so it's his way or the highway. I'd rather have that the anything goes mindset that's prevalent in most struggling rooms. Happy medium is of course ideal.

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

Here's another little theory... The 2:1 win expectation just breaks down at some point. Mike would be able to easily dismiss this idea based on the data. The idea is if you take a 800 vs a 700 and they are playing Matchroom's version of 9 ball, I could envision a scenario where the 700 just...

    Are Fargo Ratings inflating?

I won't pretend to know what's going on but I'm quite curious. 2015 Corey Deuel: 762 2024 Corey Deuel: 775 My eyes tell me he hasn't gotten better in the past ten years but relative to the top players I can intuit 775 as being correct. What gives if he hasn't gotten better? Could it be a...

    Another Farorate thread

This sums up the mindset of players like you. You would have run the rack if you hadn't missed the 9 ball? Nope the 1 ball! I actually envy players that have more confidence in their game than they should, as I'm the opposite. I've never been able to clear my mind of my shortcomings. It's...

Nick Varner is a Fargorate 777

I know...I know....all Fargo Ratings are equal. But let's pretend that they aren't for a second and consider what type of player would outrun their overall rating if they switched to playing only bar table pool. Varner is maybe a perfect example. Great knowledge, excellent banker, great cue...

    Diamond red label vs blue

I'm the eternal optimist and since you brought it up. If there's any desire and/or chance of saving the marriage -- something as simple as a personality test helped ours quite a bit and we didn't do it until after 20 years together. I'm far from perfect, but the test finally showed my wife how...

Do You Find Pros Playing 8-ball Boring?

8 Ball on any American style table, isn't just too easy for top players, it's way too easy. The beauty of the game is just lost. It's basically just 90 percent pattern recognition. For the game to be interesting -- you have to change the table (Chinese 8 ball) or change the game -- like last...

    Predator tables

I'd be pretty surprised if the Valley 93 is 4 inches shorter than the Diamond. I've read differing accounts on that. What's your source on this? Have you physically measured them?
