Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

When it comes to analyzing/comparing a specific shot (cb-ob-pocket relationship) on different size tables, it makes sense to compare table sizes from a referenced/targeted pocket. Example: Let's say we have a halfball shot into a corner pocket. The ob is 1 foot from the side rail and 40"...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

This would be better if you anchored each table outline to one of the corner pockets on the 9ft table. That would show the overlapping surface area between a 7ft and a 9ft table. The point I've been trying to drive home, in the face of adamant dismissal (lol), is this: Any shot in that...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

? Seriously, it's more of an observation than an analysis. By simply observing the shots faced most often, it's obvious that table size doesn’t make much of a difference most of the time, meaning no more accuracy than normal is needed. But if a player continues to leave long shots due to...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

I understand. My point was simply to show that despite what many players believe, there are just a few shots on a 9ft table that the player will never face on a 7ft table. And I realize I'm going against the grain here by saying that, but it doesn't make it untrue. If anything, it should help...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Lol. So there's actually a right and wrong way to analyze? Do what I said. Go to youtube and pull up any pro 9ball or 10ball or 8ball match on a 9ft table. All you have to do is watch a couple of games. There might be 1 or 2 shots out the rack that are actually shots you'd never face on a...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

I get your point, but I don't think you get mine. When watching about any match on a 9ft table between good players, you'll see that we very seldom leave a mile of distance between the cb and ob, and we tend to shoot balls into the nearest or most convenient pocket most of the time. In other...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

That's two different shots, and not what I'm talking about. In your example the distance between cb and ob, as well as ob and pocket, are different based on table size. So of course the shots aren't the same when it comes to difficulty or margin for error. However, if you look at that cut...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Good point. My diagram simply shows that most of the shots you face on a 9ft table are the same shots you face on a barbox. A particular shot might LOOK different on a small table, compared to the same shot on a big table, but it's still the same shot.

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Could be bad/inconsistent stroke mechanics. Could be inconsistent body/stance alignment. Could be bad estimation of the aim/center ob. But I agree it's a good way of testing all of these things.

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Here are two overhead shots after the break (9ball on a 9ft table). The white lines represent barbox size if the shots were to be played on a barbox, rather than the 9 footer. Good position on the 3 ball is indicated by the position zone shown in the bottom pic. If the player leaves the cb in...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

That depends on the game, and the specific barbox. On a Valley barbox, you are probably right. On a Diamond barbox with decent corner pocket shelves, it really depends on the game, due to more clutter possibilities on the smaller table. I bet a good analysis between 9ft and 7ft play would...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

That is tight! Very impressive. I've run 8 out in 1-pocket on a tight table (3 7/8") a few times, but 3 7/8 inch pockets are huge pockets compared to this!

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

It's definitely beneficial to practice on tighter pockets, as long as it's not so difficult that you get frustrated or bored due to lack of pocketing balls. That would not be a good practice session. I agree that in the long run, over time, practice and play on a 9ft does help with certain...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Honestly, most shots we face on a 9ft are exactly the same as on a 7ft, requiring no additional accuracy or skill. There are some exceptions, but not many. Some shots are harder to reach on a 9ft, and of course that extra 2ft comes into play on a shot here and there, which requires more...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

You're right. Plenty of players have proved it. But, as Bob points out, it would likely be a longer road to travel for anyone looking to be a decent player.

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Absolutely. I mean, we can direct the cue from behind our backs, and we can stand in awkward positions on occasion and still stroke the cue along the proper line. But if you used these awkward stances on every shot for a whole set, you would definitively miss a lot more shots than normal. The...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

It could simply be your alignment. Let's say your cue delivery/stroke is good and consistent, and let's say your aiming is excellent. This combination should result in very consistent play, where missing a shot is a rare occurrence. But what happens if you don't get your body/stance...

Missed Shots - why inexperienced and experienced players miss shots

Good points. I guess my main reason for this thread is to point out how rediculous it is to pin most missed shots on poor/flawed stroke delivery. Many players buy into this belief, even though there is no research to back up that belief. I actually did a little aiming experiment a few years...
