    Crooked points questions

quantify Has anyone been able to quantify the number of shims needed to shorten a point (in other words - if your point is off say an 1/8th inch - how many masking tape traingles needed). Or is it just experimentation? Chris

    Lizard Wraps

Conditioning I have found saddle soap works really well on leather wraps - cleans and puts a little moisture in.

    Player With Perfect Fundamentals

Joe Salazar May not be a world beater - but his stance and stroke are a thing of beauty.

    Undervalued Cues

My 2 cents Bert Schrager - in the same era of Ernie, Balabushka and Szamboti. In Japan they command extremely high prices. He is not making cues anymore and his prices will skyrocket. Ted Harris - on a whim after seeing his website I ordered one. His workmanship is unbelievable. My cue...

    Mental Game

Inner Game of Tennis Read it - only one chapter pertains to tennis. You reach a point where it is all about consistently getting in dead stroke. This book teaches you how.

    Throw and draw shots?

Throw on Draw You need to cut more when applying draw (draw increases the throw - the backspin on the cueball applies a little FORWARD spin on the object ball - this forward spin on a cut shot is away from the pocket). As far as amount its a feel thing.

    Willie Hoppe Ferrule Question

Answer to my question Regular non-threaded tennon - very usable. Strange design. It was a huge fiber pad that actually slips over the tennon. The ferrule is sleeved onto this. It was a really strange design. Butt ugly too in my opinion. But I am still a sucker for that full splice hit.

Ball Cleaners and other Home Accessories

Taking care of your table I bought the BallStar and it is worth EVERY penny (price varies widely but you can find one for about 350 - as cheap as I found). Clean balls are easier on your cloth and play WAY better. The only tough problem is going to the pool room where you have dirty balls...

    Willie Hoppe Ferrule Question

I have a guy that has an old Willie Hoppe (green label) that he want an ivory ferrule put on. Does anyone know if these have threaded tennons or a regular tennon. Also - I noticed the ferrule that is one there has a white part, then a black part, then the tip. Is this how they were originally...

    Dealing with slow play

I am a tournament director I had the same problem with a guy - I sat him down and told him he needed to speed things up (many had complained). Deliberate is one thing - but I have seen a race to 2 in 8 ball with this guy last 45 minutes. Not going to let the whole tournament suffer for him...

Same players winning small weekly tournament

My Solution I had the same problem - I do 2 things - I have a rule that first place has to sit out a week. My second solution is to spread the winnings more equally - like - $65, $50, $35, $24 as an example - or pay down many places. Anything to not encourage all the hustlers in town to come...

    The MiniBuffer ball polisher

I concur with Williebetmore I bought my Ballstar on the internet (they go from 250 all the way up to 700). The ballstar is the way to go - even for home use - they come out brand spanking new and dont skid. Worth the money and more. Can believe more pool halls dont get them. Chris

Who do you think the best living cuemaker?

Vote I give my vote to Paul Mottey - consistency, playability, clean, immaculate execution.

    cue butchers??????????????

Butchering I started building cues 2 years ago with Hightowers lathe. Before I started on other people's cues - I wanted to make sure I could actually build one (and make the mistakes on my own cue). Luckily - I havent butchered anything yet. I would like to praise Scott and Proficient...

Why are SW's, Searing, ____, so sought after

My 2 cents I began building cues about 2 years ago so I know a little about construction and quality. In addition to being a builder I am also a collector of pool cues and have many of the "mythical cuemakers cues". Bottom line is - most have been doing this a LONG time and are very good at...

    Bert Schrager's Shop For Sale!

I had the chime in I met Bert in the 80s as a poor college student and visited his shop to have him make me a sneaky pete. He took me around the shop while he was building it and showed me all about cuebuilding. I am talking HOURS. While in college I came across a cue in the Billards...

    Happy Birthday Ted Harris!!

Happy B-Day Ted Just wanted to thank you again for the cue you made for me (used in the new Blue Book of cues and April 2004 Billiards Digest). For all those worried about not getting their cue from Ted, he's good for it. I had to wait too - longer than expected - but the cue is worth the wait.

    Shaft Life

Basic Cue Care Yes - the tip and ferrule diameter will change slightly - but you can always change out the ferrule if it becomes to small - shafts really should last. I have a josswest that is 30 years old and still plays and rolls great. They key is get a good cue from a custom cuemaker who...
