    My win in a tournament

Congrats! It sounds like you played well and had a great time. I have a friend who also plays in the fur rondy and it sounds like it is quite the event. Chilkoot Charlie's is a cool place. Unless things have changed in AK, the calcuttas are risky. They've caused some real legal issues for a room...

    Warped slate fix

I would say no, that it wouldn't work. I think you've got the right idea, though. Search 'lapping' in the this forum and check out the threads. Also, RKC has made a sanding device out of a 2 foot level and sand paper that looks like it works great for high spots. You'll need something that...

    Spots on table for this??

We mark all of our 9 footers with a head string, head spot (a small cross line on the head string), rack outline and a line down from the foot spot. The players appreciate it and even ask to have it redone when it fades. Occasionally, someone even tries to do it themselves, which drives me nuts...

The myth that snooker is popular and profitable.

I asked Darren Appleton about this a couple of weeks ago and he said the big Riley snooker clubs in England were closing at a rate similar to pool rooms in the U.S.

    Southwest cues....Just got my call...

Yep, +1. I've loved them from day one for the way they play. It's just a bonus that all of the many that I've owned have been worth more whenever I've wanted to sell them than when I bought them. People ask me all the time what cue to buy. "I'm looking at this one..I tried that one.." and I tell...

    Rail Cloth Tension?

That's ok. Most of us are still here! As before, the more uniformity and consistency of play among tables, and rails, the better. Variances, (dirt, humidity, height of rails, age of cloth, condition of balls, etc.) from table to table will always make the ability to adjust to the conditions...

Please help identify this Titlist conversion

I'm no expert, for sure, but I'd say it IS a titlist and it isn't Cortland linen. There's lot's of great cuemakers who convert these-it reminds me of a Deviney (sp) that I saw recently-but whoever it is, it looks like a real nice one to me.

    Lighting for a 9ft table

It depends on the light. The Diamond lights we have are 4'x8', are hung 78" above the floor, and each have (4) 75 watt 5000 (color) Sylvania Deluxe Daylight 8' bulbs. 60" is, in my opinion, too low for most light designs. Whatever light design you use, I'd look at getting bulbs that are at...

    Bonus Ball

According to Nick Varner and Darren Appleton it is. Darren says the venue is just about ready to go, he's playing, and he's looking forward to it.

    Anything wrong with open bridge??

I feel like I can see the line of aim better with an open bridge and I use it whenever possible. I still use a closed bridge for hard draw shots and most shots where I'm hitting the cueball more than a bit off center ball. I've been watching a lot of Darren Appleton matches lately, and I think...

    replacing cloth

Yeah, me too. When people ask, I say we usually do them every 6-8 months, but it probably works out to more like once a year. I should do them more often-I do them myself so it's cheaper- but I don't. IMO, 5 years is too long. Tell him that the increased play from the patrons enjoying the new...

    Pool on tv

Actually, yes. They show the spelling bee competition every year. And the hot dog eating contest. They even had the cup stacking championship recently. A while back someone won $100,000.00 in Vegas at the world 'rock, paper, scissors' championships. You can't blame ESPN. Their job is to show...

Tom Rossman did a show at our place recently. He's one of the nicest guys I've met in this business, and puts on a great show.

    Pool movies?

Watch it and see what you think. Not saying it's bad-it won Oscars for Christ's sake-IMO, it's not worthy of 'The Hustler'. I hate 'The Color of Money' for the way it portrays pool. "'The Hustler' made me proud to be a pool player, and 'The Color of Money', not so much. I guess it might just be me.

Who was the best pool player you ever played in your pool career?

Hi, Lock! I played Nick Varner some years back. Got killed, of course, but it may well be the best all around player ANYONE has ever played. Love your posts-keep it up!

    Pool movies?

Yep. It's 'The Hustler', and forget the rest. 'The Color of Money' won what was a 'lifetime achievement' Oscar for Paul Newman, but, as a pool player, it's 'The Hustler', and nothing else so far.

Is it a Bad Idea to Open a Room?

No problem at all. If there were ever anything I could do to help you or anyone to open a room, all it would take is a PM. I'm not sure that I could be much help, but I guess I've been here a long time, and that's something. Thanks for the health insurance info. Believe it or not, MANY business...

Is it a Bad Idea to Open a Room?

Here's a few. Straight out of my check register, actually, as I'm spending this sunny day working on my freaking taxes, lol. TV-costs more than home service does Rent/Building payment-don't forget property taxes & insurance Equipment-you're always buying something, from vacuums to beer coolers...

    14.1 league owners

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this might be helpful info to Pocketwolf, too. I'm curious how all of the leagues charge for the matches. Does everyone pay regular table time, or is there a set green fee for each match, or something else? In our league, $7.95 gets you dinner and a match...
