I also am a vacuum and damp towel guy. I think it works great! I did this method for almost 6 years on my last table. When I broke it down to sell it I was amazed at how clean the slate still was.

I usually inspect the rack if I break 2nd ball looking for the gaps. (usually I break head ball) I tend to cluster on the side I'm breaking from when going for 8 ball break on the 2nd ball. BCA you don't win on an 8 snap.

I would go with the 9. You're not going to have many problems if any. Unless you have a long stroke and you're coming off the rail perpendicular to the wall behind.

Definitely 8 ball first. Probably had 100 B&R's before I even started shooting 9 ball. The only reason I started shooting 9 ball was because that was the only thing people gambled in my local pool hall. Probably got my first 9 ball B&R within the first couple nights of shooting.

Yes material will make a difference. But if mine didn't have a rubber end I certainly would have issues. I tend to bump mine on the floor a lot. Unless you always play on carpeted floors. :D
