I'm thinking it would get awfully whippy if you mess with the taper. Have you tried it much "as is" yet? They really play nice, but do take a few days to get used to. I would give it a little more time.

I know what you mean. I'm not sure if added squirt is the problem, but I know I can't shoot the same with a really tall tip. I always attributed it to the added tip height/cue length is just enough different that when using any english the tip is contacting the CB before you are anticipating...
